You don't see many 2.3 pintos apart from Jayson's on here and there was I believe another 2.3 Escort running at Brighton Speed Trials...

The favourite for grunt seems to be the 2.2 and I've never knowingly come across a 2.4 one in about 6yrs on the scene.

 

Is this because of the high cost of the special steel crank, etc?

And what power & torque would a person expect from a 2.4 and who's got one/had one?

2.4 pinto's are enormously expensive, there was one just built at the place I had my engine done. It was equipped with a 16valve warrior head and was making in excess of 300bhp on the dyno

 

Coltec racing do them http://www.coltecracing.com/index.html

 

And Connaught do the warrior heads on a 2.5 pinto, again with in excess of 300bhp

just seen the eaton yale car i told a bunch of 'know it alls it was about 250 brake and probably the quickest car on the field' (bearing in mind theres ferrarias and crap on the field they just laughed at me......oh well :roll:

 

does any harris not run a 2.4?

2.4 not often used as it does'nt rev like a 2.1 etc.

 

Andy harris has a 2.2.

 

2.4 NEEDs LOADS of exra work,block needs work to let the crank go around!

 

Mainly suited to rally cars where the torque is needed low down :thumbsup:

 

2.3 is great on a pinto,but not a great gain over a 2.2...only in cost :)

The car was called a pinto. Isn't it true that Ford have never reffered to the sohc cam engine as a 'pinto' ?

 

A little dit I pulled off the net, it was also known stateside as the Lima engine after the plant that built it in the US

 

The Ford Pinto engine is the unofficial but ubiquitous nickname for a 4 cylinder internal combustion engine built by the Ford Motor Company in Europe. In Ford sales literature it was referred to as the EAO or OHC engine, it is also sometimes called the Metric engine since it was designed using the metric system. The internal Ford codename for the unit was the T88-series engine.

 

It was used in many European Ford cars and was exported to the United States to be used in the Ford Pinto, a successful compact car of the 1970s, hence the name which is used most often for the unit.

 

OHC

 

In Europe, the OHC was introduced in 1970 to replace the Essex V4 in the Mk.3 Ford Cortina (Taunus). It was the first Ford engine to feature a belt-driven overhead camshaft (thus the name).

 

2.3 OHC

 

The Ford Pinto used the OHC version, a 2.3 L (2302 cm�) unit introduced in 1974 which has a 96 mm bore and 79.5 mm stroke. This version lasted until 1995 in various guises. The earliest units produced 66 kW (88 hp) and 160 N�m (118 ft-lb). This engine has also been known as the Lima engine, after the plant in Lima, Ohio, where it was originally manufactured (it was also later manufactured in Brazil).

 

In the 1980s, a turbocharged and intercooled version (with 0.1 mm less stroke) was used in the famous Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Output for this version was 142 kW (190 hp) and 325 N�m (240 ft-lb) for the 1987-88 model with the 5-speed manual transmission. The turbocharged and intercooled 2.3 was also used in the 1984-86 Mustang SVO, while the 1986-89 Merkur XR4Ti skipped the intercooler on its turbo version.

 

A dual-spark version (with two spark plugs per cylinder and distributor less ignition) was introduced in the 1989 Ford Ranger and 1991 Ford Mustang. This version produced 78 kW (105 hp) and 183 N�m (135 ft-lb).

2.3 litre or bigger Pintos need a special steel crank (usually 88mm)£1400 , special steel rods £180 each , special forged pistons £700 a set plus extra machine work for the crank to turn inside the block without hitting the sides etc . There's lots of them about as you can never get a crank from Fardon as they sell like hot cakes , i wanted one last year and there was a 3 month queue for one !!!!!!! :shock: They really hit hard with a torque wave from hell everywhere in the rev range , just watch Jaysons and you'll see for yourself :mrgreen: . If you're feeling very rich you can use a millington diamond alloy block 2.5 litre bottom end and fit a pinto head for the ultimate steath weapon , just open the bonnet and tell everyone it's a 2.1 :wink:

Go on Gaz..... Am glad to hear there'll be a few around courtesy of Farndon :P

 

And damn right about the low down punch of Jayson's 2.3... was particularly evident on the tarmac of Madeira Drive and worth a trip to 'Shakey' to see it alone... :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Aftermarket head, aftermarket block, hardly a pinto anymore is it :lol:

 

However u could of course still use existing block and 8v head, go to 2.3/2.4, and it still essentially a pinto...

Fardon can't make 2.3+ litre steel pinto cranks fast enough , they sell like hot cakes . I wonder where they all go then :mrgreen:

I was having my 2.1 n/a Zetec built by Connaught Competition Engines about 3 years ago when I saw a 2.4 "Warrior" 16v Pinto being run on their engine dyno - It was destined for a MK1 Escy from Northern Ireland.

 

That particular engine was 311bhp on the power run that I watched and it revved to nearly 9k rpm :shock: so the big-capacity pintos do rev when built properly :wink:
