A mate of mine has just bought a mark 1 escort de luxe on an F plate but we don't know much about it. A search on google hasn't even bought up another one so we don't know if the stripe down the sides is standard, if it's got an aftermarket steering wheel, how many there are etc so anything you know would be useful.

Thanks :)

Oooooooo nice find! I have a particular likeing for those very early Mk1's. There are many differences between those and the later Mk1's.

Early cars had different internal & external door lock mechanisms, sticky out fuel filler, external bonnet catch, different wireing loom, heater controls/switch panel, steering wheels etc etc. The very early F & G reg cars had front tension struts instead of an antirollbar. All early shopping model cars were badged as Deluxe or Super. After late 1970 they changed to to L or XL. Around the same time, all of the above mentioned bits were changed for the later spec items along with various trim and paint colour changes etc.

I'd say the colour of your car looks like blue mink. The stripe looks like it's been added by someone who's owned it at some time. Ford didn't paint em like that. The steering wheel is an aftermarket one.

What do you plan to do with the car? Keep us updated

Nice find - when was it last taxed cos it doesn't come up on DVLA.

Steering wheel looks like a period Springalex (as does the boss - they are worth good money if genuine) and the stripe was a popular 'go faster' job using a couple of aerosol cans in the late 70's. The idea was to try and ape some of the look of "Esso Blue", Roger Clarks works car, LVX 942J. Always used to make us rally boys laugh back then when we saw one - to se it now is a real time warp.

Take care of her and keep us up to speed on your progress.

It's thought to have been taken off the road somewhere between 1975 & 1977. The last tax disk that has been found ran out in 1975  The car belonged to my mates girlfriends Uncle. He died in the summer last year and the car had been sat locked away in his garage and nobody knew it was there until they started clearing his house out  The house was also locked up when he moved out of it some years ago and nobody had been in it

That is good that we know the colour and I wasn't sure about the stripe, I'll have a look at the steering wheel to see if there are markings on it but it looks great and very period.

Thanks everyone for your help and comments. As soon as I'm allowed to post photos I'll post the story of what has happened in the last month since finding it

Top find and i bet its got some other nice bits on it apart from the steering wheel, but will add didnt the early ones have square headlights, and putting the round lights was a common modification.

Apart from the steering wheel and possibly the stripes everything seems standard.

Does anyone have any photos of a standard de luxe?

That so looks like what my mates car should 8) Is that the standard steering wheel on a de luxe? It looks like a mark 1 transit wheel, I hope that doesn't cause offence because it looks awesome. It's so nice to see another F plate one 8) Out of interest when was that one first registered? They haven't found the logbook for my mates one yet.

My Dad had an N reg 1300 L and I remember that being scrap in 1983  It was so rutsy it wasn't worth repairing  No wonder decent ones go for good money now :D

Mad as anything, this car is exactly the same as my uncles, it was in silver with the round lights even tho it was on a g, had a black stripe exactly the same, and sadly it was put on, by himself cos they were a sporty mod back in the day, along with the steering wheel, quarter bumpers and later back reverse lights, so it looked like a twin cam from behind, probably not helped but eh,

And good find, hope to see it in the restorations forum.

Hi yeah standard wheel as far as i know-not sure if its like a Tranny one not seen one to compare?? No offence i think its cool in a retro kinda way.

Registered 16th February 1968-built January 1968.

I'm sure somewhere on the site theres a chassis tag decoder that tells you month and year of production-has it still got the chassis plate on it?? I;ll try and find it.
