FlashCadillac Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 So im rebuilding the capri... all new Gaz suspension up front big brakes front and back... and an engine that will be 200-300bhp (depending how im feeling when i ask for it be built) Thing is... when i last drove the capri it had a shagged 1300 Xflow in it.... which is what??? 10bhp i think roll cages can look realy good sometimes but the capri is keeping all its lovely brown interior and is going to look fairly stock what do you guys think?
Stu_B Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 You can stiffen it with strut braces, so a rollcage is only necessary if you want the safety factor or like the look.
FlashCadillac Posted January 7, 2008 Author Report Posted January 7, 2008 wasnt thinking so much about the stiffness more about my head being ripped off when i over cook it round a corner
hotrodholty Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 full cage or just rear? what will the car be used for?
FlashCadillac Posted January 7, 2008 Author Report Posted January 7, 2008 road and drag im thinking a 4 point cage just over front seats... just like you would in a 2 seater car and having removable door bars adnd removable diagonal in the back so poepl can still get in to be honest if there is more than 2 in the car then i wont be driving like a tw*t and if there is only two then at least it still covers the front seats im not willing to drill big holes in the parcel shelf to get the cage through it... id rather sit in hospital healing that drill holes in it

Admin Vista Posted January 7, 2008 Admin Report Posted January 7, 2008 Personally I wouldn't bother, added weight on the drag strip and overkill on the roads (IMHO)
Wessie Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 old cars on the roads nowadays verus modern traffic, increased number of lorries, 5star rated NCAP cars etc, a roll cage is a must ! it stiffens up the car if a good cage, mounts etc is used (better handling) it looks good ! its makes you and the passengers safer it gives you somewhere safe to mount the seatbelts/harnesses for the few hundred pounds they cost i would definatly recommend them even though i've never used on on the road when i've had crashes at racing the whole front end of the car has been destroyed, but only up to the front legs of the cage (the front wheel ended up touching the front cage foot) but i managed to walk away, legs and ankles fine ! now if i was in the same car without a cage then i doubt i would have much of a right leg left ! some say its overkill to put one in a road car, but you just dont know who's gonna hit you/what your going to hit etc ! so do it !
Admin Vista Posted January 7, 2008 Admin Report Posted January 7, 2008 old cars on the roads nowadays verus modern traffic, increased number of lorries, 5star rated NCAP cars etc, a roll cage is a must ! A fair argument it has to be said However 5 star NCAP cars are designed so that they collapse without impinging on the safety cell. Our cars were never designed like that so fitting a roll cage will likely not prevent an NCAP rated car shunting your dash / engine & box onto your legs in a head on collision.
tim Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 if it wasnt for a roll cage in my old blue mk2 i wouldnt be sittin here
Muttley MK2 Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 When I wrote off my first escy mk1 van in the seventies I hit a lamp post at 20 mph, the engine a 1600 xflow ended up on top of the passenger seat, coming right through the bulkhead. A roll cage would not help in this (a very common accident) type of shunt.

Muttley MK2 Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 Yeah so was I then and look what happened Come to think of it I still drive like a silly tw*t now
Super_Shaun Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 Ive a cage in the Escort and it doesnt interfere with the front two seats at all. It does however make the rear seats useless which is a bonus as I have an excuse to never take more than one passanger anywere. Gives a bit of added saftey and I quite like they way it looks.
105eee Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 yeah but im a youth and drive like a silly tw*t im planing more for the over cooking it round a corner incident how about spending the money on lessons on, how to handle a car so you don't drive like a twat
