Hunter T Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Where is the best place to get bubble arches from?? Got plans for my mk1 but dont know whether to get steel or fibreglass and how much they cost? If anyone has experience in fitting them how much of a job is it??? any useful advice would be greatly appreciated cheers
60ftman Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I've always had good service from Honeybourne Mouldings www.honeybournemouldings.co.uk Nice people to deal with. good service etc.
Rick Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 fitting bubble arches is hard work either way id say go steel if you can afford them, mine are fibreglass and once the weather changes temperature you can see the very feint outline of rivets and the join... and im guessing one day its gonna crack theres lots of filler work involved in both methods worth the effor though cuz they look mean
Hunter T Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 maybe.... just early thoughts but I havent seen one in mink with bubbles and i thought it may look quite good.. especially with the same wheels but banded! what you reckon? I need some1 to do me photoshop trickery to see what it would be like! any takers???
aled Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I bought my steel arched Mk1 already done, and credit to the restorer. Lovely job. As said above, go steel if you can. I'm sure I saw a steel set go on e bay for £205.00 just recently. There's an interesting site below. http://www.spannerfodder.com/the_works_ ... flares.php
Hunter T Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Cool... Another thing... is there a set size for arches or details anywhere where i could find original measurements??? I have seen lots of repo arches on cars and some look wrong... ie too wide or deep etc etc... Pics of any peoples motors would be wicked
kidcos Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 got a set of fibreglass arches i have had them in my shed 4 years i got them for my first mk1 but decided to fit steel ones they are better but it was a hell of a job to fit them! make me an offer if you want them. also got a fibreglass rear boot spoiler for mk1 escort
susiemk1 Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 As has been said one hell of a job to fit but well worth it
Mick The Cabbie Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 not your blue mink mk1 What he said. You've got a lovely Escort there mate. Leave it as it is. If ya wanna fit bubbles, go buy another not so nice mk1. Just my opinion of course..
Hunter T Posted January 9, 2008 Author Report Posted January 9, 2008 Cool.... think il keep my eye out for steel arches... Might start a poll to see who thinks what bout arching it at all!
sambo Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Arch it. Arch it. Arch it. You know it makes sense!!!
Doc Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 i like all four arches to be rear type ! Looks hard as fook and i think im right in thinking its the way Retro prefers to do his ....... At least its my view ..... I wouldnt do yours though mate unless you were going to go the whole hog

At least its my view ..... I wouldnt do yours though mate unless you were going to go the whole hog surely not :-S there would be less room to turn your wheels if you fitted the rears to the front. i like the huge front arches
Retromotorsport Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Dunno about lots of filler on steels ... Excuse the nails .. someone was having a laugh ... But as you can see, when fitted properly theres not a lot of filler reaquired ... As for the EBAY arches ..carefull , there was some seconds floating around that have ripples in them spreading from near the swage lines ... these are a pain to shrink out . Choices of arch ... 2 styles in steel.. Gartrac ..made by expressed but only avalible from Gartrac and these have the fronts sitting a little higher near the top of the wing .. Expressed Panels ... every one else who sells bubbles gets them from here, and this is the source of those seconds ... but every one that i've had from Expressed has been 100% and is where i tell my customers to get thier arches from . And i've fitted a fair few sets from Expressed to not only Escorts but E Types, Jensen Healey's, MGB's, 100E's and 105E's and all have has perfect surfaces free of ripples ... I recently fitted a set of Expressed ones that where bought of a trader for £350 at a show by the customer.. they didnt even come close to fitting , like i said .. beware of the seconds that may or may not be liftted from Expressed's skip !!!! Go direct to Expressed or rally design

I wouldnt do yours though mate unless you were going to go the whole hog I use the standard front and rears on Escorts ... its suits the car .. But on every other car i use 4 Fronts ... infact they fit Jensen Healeys so well you would think they where made for the JH
Hunter T Posted January 9, 2008 Author Report Posted January 9, 2008 Thanks for the help and advice guys Im torn bout whether to fit them... if i do i would -Keep the paint colour -Keep the wheels (banded tho) -Keep the full interior (which is fookin lovely) -Lower it -then mehanically sort it inc brakes, running gear, sus, drivetrain and fit a stonking Xflow... Would it be good to do or not? I personally havent seen any mink blues with bubbles on and think it would look good
