sambo Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 On the way back home from the rollers after getting my new carbs set-up. It started running really, really rough. Then i could hear a loud knocking noise. Not sure where it's coming from yet but whatever it is, its gonna ruin all my plans. I just booked the track day at Brands as well. Absolutley gutted. It seems i just chuck ALL my money at the car and nothing ever goes right. Really pissed off right now. Rollers cost 70 odd quid and i bought some oil too so thats over 90 quid i paid today just to ruin my engine. Dunno what to do now. A re-build is gonna cost ££££ and i just havent got it. So i am stuck with a tatty car, fooked engine, nice wheels that dont fit and an ever decreasing bank balance, (not to mention a pised off girlfriend).
Admin Mk2Jo Posted February 1, 2008 Admin Report Posted February 1, 2008 Where there no signs of a problem on the rollers
sambo Posted February 1, 2008 Author Report Posted February 1, 2008 Hi Jo, no sign of any probs. Other than getting really hot (but its always done that) and oil pressure was a little all over the place, 40 psi, then 80 psi etc?
johnny_h Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 oil pressure was a little all over the place, 40 psi, then 80 psi etc? that would have raised alarm bells for me. gutted man.
Admin Mk2Jo Posted February 1, 2008 Admin Report Posted February 1, 2008 Hmm, not sounding too good mate I really hope it's nothing serious (not very helpful I know ).
Pye Man Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Hi Jo, no sign of any probs. Other than getting really hot (but its always done that) and oil pressure was a little all over the place, 40 psi, then 80 psi etc? Gutted for you Sambo. Ive had fluctuating oil pressure before and it was the oil I was using. I hope you get it sorted
sambo Posted February 1, 2008 Author Report Posted February 1, 2008 I always use valvoline 20/50. On the way home the oil pressure hit as low as 20psi. Not good. The oil pressure was fluctuating when i did the last brands track day but the oil hose split so i put it down to that. Obviously it was more terminal!!
johnny_h Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 didn't you just buy that engine? maybe it was on it's way out when it was being sold.
Mk 1 Mark Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Absoluted gutted for you sam......Oil pump couldhave gone tits up buy the sounds of it.... You have pm
sambo Posted February 1, 2008 Author Report Posted February 1, 2008 Well, i got the engine over a year ago but i havent run it much cos the car isnt on the road yet and i only did the one track day. It's only been on the rollers twice and then a track day. Seemed ok until then. !!
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Hope it's something minor mate but it sounds like a strip down is needed . These cars aren't cheap but when they're fixed you can't beat them . Just stick with it even if it takes a while as you'll get all your money back when you eventually sell up
oliwally Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Sounds like 2 things it could be,either a duff oil pump or the big end shells are worn/broken. either way sounds like the sumps gotta come off and have a look. that sucks man
sambo Posted February 1, 2008 Author Report Posted February 1, 2008 Really that engine has been a big load of trouble and head scratching. First, the coolant side. The top of the radiator was getting really hot, whilst the bottom was stone cold? Then i get this fluctuating oil pressure. I put some of it down to the oil cooler but it was probably wishfull thinking? Now this. Poo.
BaileyMex Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 my car if fooked after a rolling road session too Where did you take it?
john_3.0s Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 swop u a 1600 pinto lol............. seriously mate gutted for ya , if u need a hand tugging the lump out i got an engine hoist and i'll give ya a hand

johnny_h Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 hmmmm, I did tell you mine was still pinking after I left! What damage is done mate? Was it during the run or what?
BaileyMex Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 hmmmm, I did tell you mine was still pinking after I left! What damage is done mate? Was it during the run or what? Seemed ok after, drove all the way home fine, put it in garage, went to use it a week later for the gatwick meet and it was running like shit.....limped it back home, not had time to sort it yet tho
johnny_h Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Sorry to hear that mate. Hope it's nothing serious. If you need any help give us a shout
BaileyMex Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Sorry to hear that mate. Hope it's nothing serious. If you need any help give us a shout Thanks m8 Sorry thread Hi-Jack, back over to you Sambo
sambo Posted February 1, 2008 Author Report Posted February 1, 2008 Lol, cheers guys. and thanks John, i'll take you up on that mate, deffo. Have to go for a beer soon too. Thats it though, cars gonna be in the garage for ages now, simply havent got the funds to fix it or do anything to it now. The joys of old skool motoring eh! Took it to Gerald dale motorsport in Ninfield by the way, i dont think it was anything he done though. It was just the engines time is all!!
Admin Vista Posted February 1, 2008 Admin Report Posted February 1, 2008 Gutted for you Sambo, low oil pressure and a knocking noise sounds like big end shells to me. That's not the end of the world though and providing the crank is ok, a new set of shells and a new High Pressure oil pump (worth adressing that concern at the same time) won't break the bank in terms of parts costs. Best of luck getting it sorted mate
