MexDan Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 I'm planning to fit a hydraulic handbrake to my mex as i'm fed up with constantly having to adjust the cable version on it atm (due to over and heavy use ).. but have a few questions... From what I can work out I can use my exsisting fly off handbrake lever (as i still want to be able to lock it on).. but can I still use the drums or do i need to upgrade to discs on the back?? Cheers
escort21 Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 You'll need a cable handbrake still to pass an mot
kevmk2 Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 I know that me and about 5 of my mates have hydralic handbrake and have been to various mot stations and have never had a problem with the handbrake, they were most worried about the emissions, mine only lets out 2.5% C.O so i was ok
sebspeed Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 if you have a seperate fluid supply/resevoir you don't have to have the cables[handbrake system has to be independent from footbrake system]
mr shag Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 you can still use the drums if you want to
MexDan Posted February 18, 2008 Author Report Posted February 18, 2008 Ok Cheers Guys I know there maybe some issues with MOT etc but was just interested in the way it would be done. How does the system attch to the drums?? (I will eventually upgrade to discs when i have the cash) Does it utilise the brake lines that are already there?? Cheers
kevmk2 Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 The main brake pipe that runs from front of the car to back has to go into one side of the handbrake cylinder and the other side comes out and goes to the rear brakes, so just runs in line
Nettles Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 It’s probably worth popping down to your nearest MOT bloke and asking him to check the regulations book that they all have to keep. I did a while back because I intend to fit a fully hydraulic hand brake system to my ’53 Anglia. I was told that it depends on the age of the vehicle as to weather you can fit a hydraulic system. Most cars are only allowed a hydraulic-to-cable system not full hydraulic. I can’t remember the when the cut off point was but, I was told that because mine is a 1953 model I’m only allowed to fit a full hydraulic hand brake system as long as it’s completely separate from the rest of the braking system fitted to the car. So I’m going to have to fit an additional calliper to one of the rear wheels to act as a park brake. Deffo worth checking out before you start working on it.

Be careful, can fail mot on little/no effort on parking brake test. also got to be at least 16% effiencent if its been upgraded to a dual brake line,25% if its still a single brake line.
toad650 Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 I've got a hydrolic handbrake on mine and not had any probs with the MOT but then i'm quite chummy with him. It is true your not spose to have them unless the 2 systems are separate as if you get a fluid leak you lost!! But to do this you'll either need to get a systme that works on the existing cable bits or fit separate calipers for the hand brake as its spose to work on both rear wheels. Might be different with a LSD as the brakes from one side will lock the other side. If you do do it you can still use the drums by running the brake line through the handbrake but remember if your using it like you are you'll now be putting more pressure on the rear cylinders as there be doing the handbrakeing now instead of the mechanical cams so you might end up blowing up the cylinders!!!! which is gonna give you a leak n blar blar blar
cledus Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 I've got a fly-off handbrake from TAS (Tasuka Aluminium ????), and it has hydraulic cylinder and cable mounts to satisfy MoT. There is an article in CF somewhere where they fitted a hydraulic handbrake, and ran a cable. I'll see if I can dig it out.
