antz Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 whats my best option for a gearbox in my escort? Its got a standard type 2 box in at the moment which is ok for the 1300 but when i put the 1700 in i have heard rumours itll eat it for breakfast so ive had a look around and its either a sport box or a rs2k 4 speed. (i dont like 5 speed) which would be better to put in ? and whats involved in getting either of them to fit? cheers
Admin Vista Posted May 4, 2008 Admin Report Posted May 4, 2008 What have you got against 5 speed antz? the ratios in the RS 4 speed and the type 9 5 speed aren't that dissimilar apart from 1st. Don't believe all the T9 BS that floats around either. After all it's a mechanical component the same as any other. If you want to double the power that goes through it then be prepared to have it rebuilt first, same as you would during the rebuild of any other mechanical part of the car.
mossy Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 as vista said... or use the capri 2.8 box with exactly the same ratios as the 4speed....But an cruiser 5th is what im doing.
antz Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 i drive a volvo 240 estate with a 5 speed and i dont like 5 speed....i have trouble finding 5th in 5 spede cars when im driving fast i like 4 speed i just need a heavier duty 4 sped box that i wont munch in 5 mins flat. does the rs 4 speed require gearstick hole movement?
mossy Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 i drive a volvo 240 estate with a 5 speed and i dont like 5 speed....i have trouble finding 5th in 5 spede cars when im driving fast does the rs 4 speed require gearstick hole movement? Learn how to drive propers then! get a quiafe rebuild kit....got a spare grand! i dont think you need to move the hole...(waits to be corrected!)
mk1mexico Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 Yes you need to move the hole for a RS box. Fitted a 5 cog in my dads Rs2000 and we didnt have to move it, so that tells me the 5 speed and RS box are of similar length 1600 sport box should be a straight swap
antz Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 id otn have £1k to spare and i dont want a 5 speed box. my car my choice plus its too much hassle to chop about teh tunnel to fit it. looks like im getting a 1600 sport box cos im not chopping the car about. cheers greaeme (spelling of your name? )
tonymk2wagon Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 5th in a type 9 is a over drive gear 0.8 and 4th is 1.1 so you can drive just as fast as a rs box without using 5th then struggle to find 5th on the motorway only . ive had much more than my fair share of pants t9's but when there good there worth it. . if you have the green backs a recon would be the only way to go.
antz Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 thats the thing...i dont have the money. i was gonna stick to the type 2 four speed box but ive been told by a few peple that i might munch the gears so ill get a sport box as i dont have to move the hole
MexDan Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 Go for a Rocket Box mate... got one in mine and they as strong as anything.. especially seeing as you can wack come straight cut gears in there and get that beautiful wineing sound as well!!!
antz Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 i dont want it to whine like fook. i just want something that can take the power of a 1700 without eating itself
bmxdave Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 i dont want it to whine like fook. Yeah you do. Have a look at the rocket box. Should be more then up to it even without straight cut gears. And i dont think youll need to do any relocating. I always found the 1300 box in the mk2 cortina was useless. The gears where all set up wrong so between 2nd and 3rd there was a big gap of nothingness. Id go for the rocket box cause i know the ratios are good. Ive got a 5 speed in mine, with a long first gear and its absolutely brilliant. I would recomend it. I know you say you prefer the 4 shooter but think of the fuel savings!
MexDan Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 i dont want it to whine like fook. i just want something that can take the power of a 1700 without eating itself If you dont want it to wine you dont put straight cut gear in it!! Still a strong box and the ratios are pretty good!!
antz Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 but i gotta move my geastick hole and cos im fussy the centre console wont fit right so ill have to spend hundreds getting a nice brown RS centre console which is more expense
antz Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 just use the standard one til it breaks but the idea of changing it is whilst its all out i might as well upgrade. do it once and do it right
PIG Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 i think it would have to be a very hot 1700 to destroy it m8 tbh
antz Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 i think it would have to be a very hot 1700 to destroy it m8 tbh possibly but i dont wanan risk it....i dont wanna driving it wondering if the box will break. id rather spend the money and know it wont
MexDan Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 As a guide: English axles and 2000e boxes are good upto 150-160 bhp after that you are likely to get transmission failure Rocket boxes are used after that and are good upto 170-180 bhp Ratios: 2000E 1st 2.972:1 2nd 1.97:1 3rd 1.4:1 4th 1:1 RS2000 3.65:1 1.97:1 1.37:1 1:1 Rocket 2.54:1 1.66:1 1.255:1 1:1
antz Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 cheers after some thinking this afternoon i think ill probably go for a sport box as its got a bit more strength to it over the standard box and i dont wanan chop all the tunnel about and fanny around
