been thinking about a yank ford v8 oil burner for my garanada when the essex finally expires but the old b!tch keeps on going with next to no oil pressure!

 

sound is what puts me off, but with shed loads of torque and a 4 speed auto it would fly i reckon

my dads got a chevy day van with a diesel v8 in it, you could pull a house down with it and it sounds awsome like a mack truck, i like big diesels in trucks, 4x4s ect but as for in a classic car no no no.

One major advantage with Diesels is that there are no different grades. I can't remember the exact name for it, but think of Petrol... You have two grades of Unleaded which are measured in 'RON'. The higher the RON, the more combustable the fuel, hence higher performance.

 

Diesels don't have this problem, the only problem they do have is they are a low revving engine. So in theory, if you give it a couple of Turbochargers (One small one for low revs, and one mahoooosive one for full power) and a couple of more gears... you will fly.

 

Saying that though, i'm sure it won't be long before someone can get a Diesel to 'Redline' at 6 or maybe 7000 rpm. Think of all that lovely torque you will get.

 

Diesels have come a very long way, who would have thought that manufacturers would be getting 180 bhp out of one? Years ago you could over rev them which caused them to start running on the engine oil at full chat then detonating because they had used the oil up. You could also get them to run backwards which would give you 4 reverse gears and one forward

 

It's amazing isn't it... a few years ago I was very very anti-Diesel. It's a different story now.

I don't think anyone should bad-mouth a diesel until you've driven one, well a modern one anyway!

 

Loads of torque at the bottom of the rev range, you can pedal along quite quickly without taking it over 3000rpm, which is why the economy is so good. My Navara weighs a couple of tons yet I still get 26mpg despite booting it everywhere.

 

Still wouldn't put a diesel in a MK1 escort though, there should be a law against it
