FredTransit Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Red diesel is the same as white in quality, it has a chemical marker that is detected by the ministry if you are dipped on the public roads. It's legal for off road use only, and you may not be able to explain away the presence of the marker in your tank if you are on the public highway. You can't use the car on the public roads if it's had red in it, you are supposed to wash every bit of evidence you have used it before going back to the road from the private land you have legally used the red on. Veg oil is now legal to use up to 2500L per year now, as already mentioned. If built a car only for the strip, there should be no reason you can't use red in it.

badchild Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Yeah im with Fredtransit on this one, red is every bit as good if not better than white, it is purer diesel, but id say the staining is an old wives tale, at the worst i would imagine it would make your fuel filter element pink. Theres a place by us is doing white diesel the same price as red everywhere else lol They have a cube in the back of a battered old van and they fill up from that, fookin good diesel too, its just brought across the border
allanmex Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Just remember, if you're running your strip diesel on chip fat, make sure it's got a BOSCH fuel pump, cuz they're the only ones that'll cope with it so I've read. ive heard that too, but ive been running my old pug 306 on veg oil for ages with a lucas pump with no probs at all, in fact i think it runs better than diesel

bortaf Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 New veg oil has a higher calorific value than diesel so it burns hotter and you get more power, used really needs the soaps removing (produced in the re-heating and cooling process IE cooking) by adding hydrogen peroxide and then washing with water, using neat USED cooking oil is NOT the best option, power wise Also used oil has less lunbication propertys hense not using it in a lucas pump although i run the wifes lucas pumped escort on 1/2 and 1/2 thats only cos i use NEW oil. Red is the old high sulpher diesel we used to get at the pumps and actually runs better in older engines that where designed to run on it (Di and LR ect), kitty litter does NOT work the only way to get rid of the dye is to use acid to neutralise it but then that ruins the pump seals Been there, tried it, bought the new pump

By soaps do you mean the tallow (animal fat) that settles as an opaque scum at the bottom? Can't be doing with the washing or other chemistry lesson stuff, which is the same reason I won't be going on to making biodiesel. We mix it 50/50 with diesel so effectively it's halving the diesel bill. New oil isn't that much of a saving to try it as far as I am concerned. Netto was the cheapest I could see, and that's still 90p per litre I understand we can do a higher percentage, and next I am going to try acetone with it.

I had a pug 206D and when i serviced it the fuel filter was pink said to the guy i got it off been running ribena have we he just smiled and went as pink as the filter

walshe Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 afaik you cannot use anything but diesel in newer mondeos passats etc something to do with them being commonrail injection as apposed to indirect injection i think. they get quite upset if anything other than straight diesel is used in some instances will not start or run at all
