JAY PS Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Just got back earlier today from Bromley Pageant ,very disappointed . The show in my view used to a very organised event by one of the top motoring magazines ,its now run by an events company i will say no more ! The autoglym concours section wasnt this year it was full of fast and F type stuff modifed mk5 escort and a 206cc !! Where was the Austins ,the lotus Cortinas and others that used to fight it out for the trophy cabinet ! The arena was hosted by a total knob saying to people why did they own their car (why do bloody think you pratt) To top this the arena had let a load of cars that i dont think can be deemed classic or otherwise LOADS OF MAX POWER type crap with stupid exhausts all revving the shit out of there puny engines! There was a noticeable ambsence of some major car cubs ,big holes where club stands should have been and the autojumble was just expensive model stalls and tatt .(Its getting thinner every year) The drinks and food stalls are always dear but today they thought they were petrol stations (i mean £1.50 for can of coke) The car for sale section was a joke ,someone was asking £4k for rotten looking 2dr GT Cortina on a trailer that was full of filler and a Wolesey Car that look like it had sat outside for 30 years was £1,000 ! I know thats just people trying it on but i did see a standard peugeot 106 in there !!!! Dont know if any one else shares my views but ive been to Bromley every year bar 2years in the last 15 years and im considering not bothering next year ,it cost over £30 to get in it and £15 in fuel getting there ,is this the reason some clubs didnt go ! There was one club member from a Ford club saying that 20 members were booked to go but in the last few weeks 15 pulled out due to the cost of fuel getting there it would not be affordable .Their stand had two cars so they cancelled it and put there cars in the one make parking area . Seems a shame that this recession has hit so many people so hard and its affecting these shows .Hope these fuel prices get resolved otherwise other shows will also be affected .
285Andy Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 i got there about 2oclock. i thought a lot had already gone home but if what you say about people pulling out then that explains things. i wont bother again as i just though the content was just too sparce. and sod the autogimp competition!. that really drew a crowd (not). im probably one of the worst people to go to a car show as i can walk round in half an hour get v bored and want to leave anyway. one car stood out to me though and that was the space framed 100e prefect exellent but nah,,, not bothering again. just lucky i didnt have to drive very far lol!
JAY PS Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Wheres all the cars its only 12 o clock
Mr.Sumo Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Kind of gladi didn"t go reading this , Fathers Day an all that ....wtf is a Land Rover doing there
martymk1 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 used to, but i'm glad i don't bother anymore
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I try to go every year and this year was no exception. Me and my mate got there about 9:00ish and the queue to get in was mahoosive. They have done some re-organisation regarding parking. They are now putting the public in one place (fields behind Norman Park) with one way in and one way out, whereas before, the public could enter through the main entrance and be diverted off to the public parking. My mates dad always comes along too, and he was disappointed there was very little in the way of static engines/traction engines etc. I agree that it's no longer an event held by the people for the people, the 'events promotions' company are doing it no favours. My main disappointment was with the autojumble... this used to be massive, but I have noticed it getting smaller every year. My mate overheard a trader chatting to someone else about the prices to pitch. £300 for a single pitch +VAT This particular company had three pitches so that was £900 +VAT that he had to make to make his trade stand worth doing. I was also surprised to see the one make parking as small as it was, I was also disappointed with the lack of certain cars... there was only a few of each, whereas there used to be whole rows of each. Did you have an ice cream down there??? Normally I ask how much a large 99 is before I order one, but on this occasion I didn't. Me: "Large 99 please mate" Picadilly Whip: "O.k no worries" Picadilly Whip: "There you go... £3.00 please" It isn't what I would call large either. I wanted Picadilly Whip... not Picadilly prices! Now I don't know what the cause of the bad turnout was... perhaps other shows, or perhaps it was the fact people couldn't put any fuel in their cars... maybe it's because it was Fathers Day... but I can't see it being any better next year. The first thing I noticed was, there was a proper ticket sales booth thing on the entrance which has never ever been there before. We never got a bag full of random stuff either, but I think that was down to the sponsors anyway... i.e. it used to be Footman James that sponsored the Bromley Pageant... I don't know who it was this year... Live Promotions & Events most probably. Now this may seem like alot of negative vibes, it will also sound like i'm a moany bugger, but the weather was beautiful, there were some lovely cars there as usual, and it was just a great day out. I have to say I don't see any problems with the little fun fair that was there... after all, it's something to keep the kids happy, but what I do disagree with is that certain vehicles/stands cannot attend because they want room to fit the fair in. Lets face it, not all saucepans will be interested in trapzing round an autojumble watching mummy or daddy looking through endless piles of rusty parts. I also think £12 to get in is very steep, but, it is Bromley council after all, they probably want the world for hiring out Norman Park for a day. Oh well, it is a shame that it sounds like I have done nothing but moan, but as I said, there were some beautiful cars there, it was great weather, and I met a few Old Skool Forders as well. Bring it on next year
CHEVY Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I think that a lot of the autojumble sellers now sell most of their parts etc on e-bay?,so every year the autojumble seems to get smaller. Also like already mentioned the price of petrol/diesel probably stopped a lot of people attending with show cars, but i thought that there were not that many people walking around the show either. The Paegent has definatly lost something in the last 3 or 4 years, but unless you have to travel hundreds of miles to get there it is still a great day out and i will be going back next year!.
Lee-Mk2 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I have to say I enjoyed the event in fact I think on the whole it was the best one for a couple of years! That being said I think there is a lot of truth in what has been said so far. There were fewer cars in the 1 make parking - I was shocked to be the 2nd car in the row when I arrived - but I think it appeared a lot worse because the rows were so close together and therefore the parking didn't extend as far up the field. I think that was a major mistake on the part of the people setting things out. The Autojumble was very poor and has been getting worse for years although I think this is true of most events and I would guess this is due to so much stuff being sold / available online. The entry cost is too high £10 /£12 even for one make parking entrants. For me the one make parking was always the most interesting part of the event. The club stands only had to pay £5 for the car / driver and 1 pasenger so it would be more cost effective to book as a club min cost £15 for 3 car spaces. I organised the Alfa stand and it cost £50 for 10 cars each wih a pasenger where as I paid £20 for just my wife and I. Despite that the 10th car didn't turn up didn't let anyone know and so that ticket went to waste and that is a problem the organisers can't deal with. People who say they will go and then cant be bothered because it is too cloudy or they forgot to put some money by for petrol (if finances are that tight) I have been going to the pageant on and off since the early 80's and although it does seem that the event has not been as good since "Live" took over many of the people involved in the actual event are from before and therefore I dont think all the blame can be put down to the organisers. In many ways I think the event lost something when the drainage ditch appeared and split the event. I hope the event continues and I hope that someone comes up with some ideas to improve it too!
KEVSWAYV6 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Shame a lot of you thought it wasn't that good this year. I booked a 3-car club stand (Surrey Capri Club) it only cost me a fiver to get in and that included the Mrs and my car. For one of my members it was the first time he had been to the Pageant, he thought it was great! but I suppose he didn't have any previous Bromley events to compare it with. As for autojumble stuff, I think no matter where you go everthing is getting in short supply now. Food prices, answer =take your own, sorted!! £12 to get in for general public seems a bit steep I admit! Petrol prices, that's going to be a on going problem for any show organisers, and it will only get worse. I'll be back at Bromley again next year, still think it's a cracking day out. A good variety of motors under blue skies on any Sunday get's my vote.
Nik3100 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I displayed with my club and for our first time there I thought it was ok but reading the comment I would say they are also fair £12 is way to much, the commentator was a prat and autojumble wasnt up to much. Nice variety of cars, shame some of the major clubs werent there but I cant blame them.
sutton4ord Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Ive been going for years picked up couple of bargains but it is getting smaller every year nice day out .
marky4 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 £12 to get in is steep i went to AVO day yesterday was £6 to get in, free bouncy castles for the kids, a good auto jumble and a stunning setting

JAY PS Posted June 16, 2008 Author Report Posted June 16, 2008 Mark looks like you guys had a great day out ,im not saying it was a total waste of time on reflection its a sign of the times ,some of the cars were up to 60 yrs old and there is less and less roadworthy examples of all models year on year . Seems a shame that in five years and since that mess in the middle was installed that its gone downhill so rapidly . I still cant understand what the hell happened with the concours section ,someone had invited half of southend cruise !(im sure this was an emergency measure ) Can anyone tell me if enfield was any better this year that used to rival Bromley . All shows suffer from the Ebay syndrome now ,i dont know why some of the stall holders had bothered paying for pitches . There wasnt much money being spent at these stalls ,most owners moaning at the lack of people and i feel the prices put most people off There was some gems to be had ,i did spot a mk2 capri front wing and door brand new which was only £80 (That will be on ebay already !) Looks like a load of Bromley regulars were with you Mark ,shame the two clashed . Im looking forward to another Bromley show this weekend at Ravenswood School (see events listing) hopefully be a good turnout ,normally a hot rod and custom car favorite !

BobbyG Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 I agree it seemed smaller than it has been but there were some lovely cars there. I will be going again - £12 did seem a bit steep but I suppose it's only once a year!
