m1c Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 covering all options, is HGV driving worthwhile? theres always loads of jobs for it but what's the reason for it? is it that bad? I've been using a unit on site for a couple of years so pretty confident driving around and backing onto loading bays etc.
flyingbanana Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 to get your hgv 2 lience will cost between 1-2g then you can then go for hgv 1 test...you will make 1.5g a month easy...your your own boss, easy work...mostly sitting on your arse depending who you work for...some where different everyday.....just got to put up with people who cant drive
5hane Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 if you do a tanker course you can get up to 1g a DAY !! work monday, have week off

Any job you have to get training for commands a good wage. BTW I like your sig, but maybe you ought to loose number 16 on your Retards Club hate list

bigglesmk2 Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 if you do a tanker course you can get up to 1g a DAY !! work monday, have week off Shane,Your sig with kid setting fire to himself LMFAO . Im class 2 HGV driver and IMO it's definatly worth it. Personally i wont touch motorway work for the simple fact it's boring.I chuck a bin lorry round all day,it's a great laugh with the lad's ,loadsa goodie's off the resident's at christmas and only 4 day's a week, and if i get my round done in say 6 hour's i can go home and still get paid for 10 hours
glenbo Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 i got my class 1 mate and to be honest its a single mans job, hense i have done dry lining for seven years now,2g plus a month its ok for a fullback on agency work, for me anyway,i do taxi driving as wel now thats a good earner if you can put up with all the tossers
Mr.Sumo Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Hgv 1 driving ....mmm...wouldn"t bother nowadays mate tbh I"ve been driving class 1 for 22 years now and the jobs sh*te . Too many University educated pr*cks running transport that wouldn"t know one end of a truck from another and havn"t got the slightest clue about distances between towns / cities / anywhere....." its only an inch on the map " Get a trade somewhere else mate , tbh , i wouldn"t change what i have done or where i"ve been...but the job ain"t what it used to be thats for sure And anyways , all the Poles have nicked the jobs , for half the pay that a U.K driver will do it for !
hotrodholty Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 i run a car transport company mate, you can earn serious wedge with a class 1 liscence, however no one will employ you apart from an agency untill you've got a couple of years driving under your belt because the insurance firms wont touch anyone with no experience. and on top of paying for your class 1, you will need to pay and pass your ADR if you want to drive tankers, also next year the goverment have decided that all drivers must do a cpc course. it adds up quickly. and nanawagon is right, the majority of firms now have transport and logistic managers that came straight from uni with no experience of transport and dont understand a thing about drivers hours, truck maintinence, delays, distances or the fact that drivers do have a life outside work. all i can say is, if you can afford the cost of getting your liscence, and can get a job with a firm that you can trust and know your going to get looked after go for it and be loyal to that firm. it can be the best job in the world on a hot sunny day when everything is running right and the worst job in the world when your broke down in the middle of the night, with no night heater and you've got customers on the phone screaming at you wanting there delivery.
m1c Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 beauty of it all is theres a possibility i'd get the training for FREE as part of a redundancy package should i be a choosen one i did wonder how someone with no experience would get on tho
5hane Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 if you do a tanker course you can get up to 1g a DAY !! work monday, have week off really? tats what he told me, think hes just started the course. Biggles ~

bomber1 Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 beauty of it all is theres a possibility i'd get the training for FREE as part of a redundancy package should i be a choosen one i did wonder how someone with no experience would get on tho you either have to be lucky and find a firm that will take on a newby. i was working for a firm that was already looking for drivers when i put myself through tho i put myself through my class 1 nearly 2yrs ago and cant find the job that dont want 2yrs experiance.
fergus mk2 Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 jesus lads alot of work to do hgv in Britain same as a car over here but the pay is ordinary wouldnt do the long hauls for love nor money tho
flyingbanana Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 i never really had the problem with 2 yrs experiance ,i went stright to a agency and done it that way...agency pays a bit more than most company's pay their own drivers, jobs seem to come to me,ive never had to go looking for work ....sumo's comment is spot on in every way!!
escortmad79 Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 beauty of it all is theres a possibility i'd get the training for FREE as part of a redundancy package should i be a choosen one i did wonder how someone with no experience would get on tho How the fook does that work? When I was laid off & tried to get the Job centre to put me through it I was told it wasn't an essential job so wouldn't put me through! They used to but now they've got all the Polish c***s coming over there's no need for them to do it anymore!
kevmk2 Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 to get your hgv 2 lience will cost between 1-2g then you can then go for hgv 1 test...you will make 1.5g a month easy...your your own boss, easy work...mostly sitting on your arse depending who you work for...some where different everyday.....just got to put up with people who cant drive Class 2 intensive course for a week including test is between £650-850, mine was £820 nearly 5 years ago. Then i got a call from another company after doing my class 2 saying they would do class 1 and 2 for £999 all in Sods law that is. I am still a class 2 driver and i have had enough of it for the time being, thats why im doing something differant, i am now doing cctv
kevmk2 Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 And alot of the queries about tanker drivers money, its around £38k a year and your working mostly unsociable hours. Most places you work for wont pay more than £10-11 an hour for class 2 drivers and around £12-13 an hour for class 1
m1c Posted July 26, 2008 Author Report Posted July 26, 2008 How the fook does that work? When I was laid off & tried to get the Job centre to put me through it I was told it wasn't an essential job so wouldn't put me through! not thru the jobcentre I work for a large company who can afford to retrain people when theres a lot of redundancy. apparently, the budget was 4 grand per person last year on a site in the next town
Mr.Sumo Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 £12-13 an hour for class 1 Where"s that then Kev....i"ll be knocking on there door Monday morning !
FredTransit Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 I don't think you can go straight into class 1 any more, I think you have to work your way up.
m1c Posted July 29, 2008 Author Report Posted July 29, 2008 yea I been on the phone to a company called 'Coates' its a big company with a depot near me, did my flt with em years ago. you have to do LGV before HGV (class C for LGV then C+E for artic). they do a package for both licenses for just over 2k. or more if you don't pass anything first time as it wouldn't be my money it don't make any difference but im sure it'll be around the same price from anywhere.
