alfa engine

i know by the title it dosent sound ford related but bear with me, i know its along way off but i have already started thing about engines for my new mk1 escort, i was thinking of a 70's 2lt twin cam alfa engine as i beleve they were of all alloy construction and coupled to 5 speed gearbox and about 130 bhp as standard but i dont know what the engine would be out or the 'name' of the engine and also what tuning mods whould be availbe i think the engine i'm thinking of used to be put into a lot of anglias any help will appricated

fiat twin cam is somthing i hadnt thought of i want an engine that is a bit different and dosnt have a electronic managment system hence why i have been looking a period engine swaps

apparently the new alpha twin cams go on old gearboxes like zetecs on type 9s

Fiats are strong complete with steel internals, however there is also some problem with the oiling,, pumps wipe out, and I dont think they are available from fiat any more, must be ca common fault as the mains and big ends are available to -80 in incriments of 10

The other disavantage is they are heavy, fookin heavy, I think they weigh as much as a essex even with a ally head,

5 speeds are easy to get, even the GTV has a transaxle for some whacky conversion, the axle off a junior has a strong similatity to a 40s ford and I think came with a LSD,

Also there is a fair interchangability with lancia engines including the Integrale

i think the one your on about come out of the spider (i think that is what it's called little 2 seater convertible bit like a tvr 250) but i have seen one in an alfasud that were normally 1500 but this one said cloverleaf special on the back in a proper metal badge.

but i have to say that i think that this is a match maid in heaven, the fun handling of an escort and the pull of an alfa that doesn't stop till the valve bounce, when this is running right it should be fun, but on the bad side this is going to be the most unreliable car on the planet, ford's arn't reliable at the best of times and alfa's are just as bad, but the day everything goes right will make it worth it. as clarkson said

but just to throw a curve ball in there what about a 2.0 early porsche engine out of the 910,911,912 and no worring about a rad cos it's air cooled not sure what box you could use or what about the holbay engine out of the hillman hunter or the sunbeam raiper very tunable but hard to find

Not true regarding the alfa engine though, shonky electrics and a tendency to rust but the engines are superb.

 

There are a couple of west country alfa specialists that would likely be able to advise you and may even be able to supply you a good used engine.

id go down the fiat twink engin my self there are very very tunerable

 

my m8 has an anglea Van wil a 2l fiat twink and it gose like stink
