kirk10 Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 ok just googled the effects of stretched tyres Negative effects: Rims left totally exposed to kerb rash damage Tyres distorted due to being fitted to too wide a rim requiring much higher inflation pressures to prevent excessive wear on the edges of the tread surface Rough choppy ride due to higher inflation requirements Likelyhood of actually having the tyre coming off the bead if impacted Higher wear rate on suspension components Higher wear rate on wheel bearings Poor directional stability due to wrong offset being used When tyres are made the maker recommends a rim width to ensure the overall shape of the tire on the rim allows the rubber to do its job, ie. to provide grip. Changes to that shape caused by changes in rim width will usually have a negative effect on grip. Secondly, fitting a rim wider than required by the particular tyre will add 'unsprung weight' to the car, that again is known to be a big no-no, that is why race cars use magnesium alloys to get the lightest wheel for a given strength and size requirement. As we all know it takes more force to overcome the inertia of a heavy wheel than a light one,
X FLOW EDDY Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 Its the most dangerous thing you can do with tyres, it may look "cool" but if you have a crash then you will void your insurerence due to impropper fitting/use of the tyres. A mate of mine who had some 195/55/13 tyres streched over some 9in wide banded steels on his mk1 golf got stoped by the local law and was forced to remove said wheels and get his dad to bring a spare set out to him because the trafic cop said and i quote " In 15 years as a trafic cop that is the most dangerous thing i have ever seen" He also got 3 points and a £60 fine. Nuf said.

Nuf said. he must have been driving arround with his eyes closed for the previous 15 yrs then thats pretty harsh punishment, would imagine many coppers would know anything about tyre fitments

X FLOW EDDY Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 I have a lot of mates in the tyre game and i mysealf can fit all manner of car tyres and hgv tyres, its onely when you work with HGV tyres you can realy come to turms with how dangerous tyres can be and that they MUST be treated with the upmost of respect. The same goes with car tyres, poorley fitted car tyres are killers, the forces that get transmitted through the grosley overinflated side walls of theese streched tyres doesent bare thinking about. Why people dangeresley f**k about with the ONLY thing on the car that is in contact with the road is lost on me

marky4 Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 when i spoke to a guy who owns a local tyre place about fitting 175/50's on my 7 inch rims he said it was fine, i know there is not alot of side wall but in the dry the car sticks to the road like glue but in the wet it is abit twitchy and the tyres don't give you any warning when they are going to loose grip (unlike the 185/60's i had before), but i like them . my golf gti has 40 profile tyres (factory fitted) and there is half the tyre wall showing than the 175's on the escort and that really handles i think it personal choice

It depends how wide they are !!! 175/50/13 tyres on a 5 1/2j or a 6j rim would be ok in my book but on a 7j or 8j rim it would be dangerous. Like i said before its all well and good until something goes wrong, and you end up with void insurance. If you crash a car with what amounts to " defective" tyres fitted then be prepaired for a large legel bill at the end of it.
