Can you lift a cast iron block...???

right, if the compression test on the capper comes back with low compression on cylinder 3 again, the block is gettin replaced with a new-lower milage one (to get me thru the MOT)

being xmas and a crap time of year i need to do this on a HUGE budget

so... im trying to source a stripped down bottom end for ~£50quid (tested)

 

then i plan on stripping the engine down out of the car, into the shed until the bottom end.... so its as light as possible....

 

with two people would it be possible to

1. remove it out of the top of the car if the car isnt jacked up at all...

2. remove it from under the car on axel stands

 

or would i still need the hand of an engine hoist?

 

tiz a 2.0 zetec bottom end and it will be bare minus the clutch.

 

 

and... a quick one--- i have a spigot bearing in my origional bottom end so it takes the type9 box... how do i swap this over between engines??

Nearly allways easier to lift an engine out of the top, with 2 people it should be easy once everythingis disconnected,length of rope and a scaffold pole or a GOOD length of timber, minimum of 50x100, and a minimum of 2.5 mtrs long, lay the tube or wood accross the wings, tie the engine to the bar and lift , simple as that, if its on the floor, again tie the rope around the engine so 2 people can lift from each end, this way the engine is only just off the ground, and if it slips, it falls a short distance,

Can you do it on your own, Possibly, I used to lift a Small block Ford V8 short engine in my Zephyr on my own with just brute strength and Ignorance, but in hindsight, this is probably why my lower back is so fooked up these days. Get some help!!!!

dropping it out the bottom is the answer if you can't get the car high enough take the head off.

just buy a new spigot bearing, it's allways handy to have a spare bottom end built up. i should be changing mine but i'm off with a buggered neck

Out the top mate, dropping out the bottom is a whole world of more work dropping the entire front end ect.

Put it this was i've never owned an engine hoist i used to lift pintos out compleat by standing on the inner wing with a seat belt over me shoulders and doing it by meself! so 2 people with no head on it will be fine

 

Mind you i have 2 slipped discs and a prolapsed one nowdays so don't do it too often

In my more stupid days I ripped out an engine with a 2 x 4 some rope and with the gearbox of got it up by standing on the inner wings and then blocked it to hold it then got some help to be the final drop on the floor.

2 people will be fine. Uncle was telling how him and his brother were always changing worn out blocks on there old Fords. Bout £70 for rebuilt block when you give your old one back

A zetec block alone is about 80kilos. HSE guidelines for lifting stuff is 25kg close to the body for one person. £150 or less for an engine hoist is money well spent and your body will thank you for it in years to come.

we recently lifted out a complete pinto with a strap and a bar, one person on either side and bit of effort from 2 weaklings! zetec block on its own will be a piece of cake

Yes to both BUT when I did that with a pre-crossflow anglia engine (option 2) , I ended up in hospital several months later, barely able to walk with two knackered discs in my lower back which required me to have my back opened up and them operated on. Got a lovely 6 inch scar down my spine to remind me.

Ever since that day, 16 years ago, I've had nothing but grief from my back, resulting in me not being able to walk 30 yards in 2002 because the disc above the two operated on finally gave up which cost me my job and it affects my daily life. I get the disability component of tax credits for life because it's irrepairable. Today I changed the thermostat on my 2L Capper. The 10 minutes I was bent over the engine left me in agony.

 

So get a hoist and save your back. It ain't worth it.

As above, I lifted a crossflow out of a mk1 escort, sling across my neck, squatted on strut tops then stood up, my mate then grabbed it onto the front panel. I was 6'6" 30 yrs ago and did lots of training, back now mullered and 6'4". You do the maths. Hire an engine crane (unless you want a blue badge and walking like you crapped yourself )

Being hit by 2 smackheads in a nicked Honda didn't help either.

ye i use 2 lift xflows in and out used 2 take front wheels off and lower it on the jack,

i used to do the same as all you boy's are saying when i was younger,spent from the age of 15 til about 25 ripping thing's out like this,

 

like tranny di's,rover v8's and straight 6,pinto,v6's,with and with out box's

 

i have alway's been around motor's and for the sake of a few quid i wish id brought a engine hoist ir rented one,

 

because im now nearly 38 and i suffer form back ache i used to be able to pick up a pinto on my own once block and head but now day's i cant even pick up the block,and i know when i been doing some lifting or had a long day at work,

 

moral of the story yes you can lift them out by hand but why would you want to when you can do it the easy way

 

im not picking on any-one

i can still carry a pinto but lifting it out of an engine bay will still take me and another to get it high enough and mexy and i lifted it into the back of his car for him to transport home but i know he has a crane there,

but cake id say get a mate round to help lift it out of the bay

The guys work to regret it, and do warn me about doing such things. But being young I'm stupid

 

Was only a once off with that engine anyway, just moved out the back of a van onto some wheels. If I ever attempted to change an engine etc, I'd always be safe and use a engine crane or similar.

 

I shift heavy fridges and units in my line of work, so knowing HOW to lift properly is a big help. Do it wrong, and its curtains.

best way i can think of doing it without a hoist is the way i did it but you will need two mates or your dad and brother like i had ... jack the car up and get a 4x4 fencepost across the wings with enough sticking out to get your shoulder under .... jack the car up tie the engine onto the post securely then get one person either side under the fence post and lower the car off the jack ... lifting without the lifting part ... easy as you like simply walk it out forwards and put it down making sure you bend your legs not your back to put it down (an old tyre is good to keep it upright drop the bowl of the sump in the middle

If you still got the gearbox on the car though, surely you'd have lift the engine forward before you lower the car?

listen to the old wise ones...upto when i was about 24 id changed hundreds of engines on pure grunt with scafold poles..back is now fooked was on pain killers for nearly 5 yrs..should av listened to me dad
