antz Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 i know the most important thign about vw's. they are shit (but i do like lupos)
X-pack-Glyn Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 they are shit Had many then antz? i have had quite a few and i dont think they shit at all... sure some models are better than others.. the last golf i had mk3 required nothing but a yearly service, 4 tyres, a set of discs and pads and a master cylinder in 100,000 miles... show me any other car that will do that
Copey Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 VWs arent shit at all, my dad had a H reg polo (second car) and it got loaded up with junk, raged about, abused, didnt get looked after properly, had it for quite a while all it needed was MOT's tax and tyres, sold it for as much as he got it for, bloody great little car!!

If you took the golf out for a 50 mile caning it would get back and sound sweet ticking over happy as happy, but the zetec would come back coughing and spluttering.
Admin Vista Posted December 30, 2008 Admin Report Posted December 30, 2008 they are shit Had many then antz? i have had quite a few and i dont think they shit at all... sure some models are better than others.. the last golf i had mk3 required nothing but a yearly service, 4 tyres, a set of discs and pads and a master cylinder in 100,000 miles... show me any other car that will do that I agree, far too much generalisation. Some of the Golf GTi's have been fantastic, The Corrado was also a fabulous car But the piece de resistance (IMHO) was the rare 4WD supercharged Golf G60 limited edition ( a 210 bhp monster that we didn't get )
antz Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 have i ever owned a vw?....ok i havent, i admit that BUT both my parents have had vws, many of my friends own vws and they are always breaking down (more than fords!), always need fixing, parts are expensive, hard to work on, look ugly and so on and so forth. name another car that can go like the ones mentioned above...aka...forever on no love? volvo didnt their reputation on their dashing good looks volvos are wel known to run forever with regular servicing. I seem to think the highest mileage car EVER is a volvo p1800 with over 1.5million miles and still going to this very day!...... i dont think a vw would ever break 300k and dont get me started on vw camper vans.....
X-pack-Glyn Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 i had 2 scirocco's both mk2 GTis, id have another tomorrow... amazingly quick and built to last. The red one i had cammed and power rohr'ed and would spin up the wheels in third with ease from 3000 rpm with NO torque steer, admittedly it used to lunch CV joints monthly but these are a doddle to change and i used to use cheap ones as replacements, genuine VW ones would have lasted better. My current transporter is the best van ive had (and ive had em all).

You must be tallking abouyt the gen1 version of the 05 passat mate, they had quite a few problems with those as did the mk4 golfs, but it was only certain models and those in the know knew what to avoid. its the same with the mk3 golfs, the later mk3 golfs are made in africa and are the nuts, the early ones werent so good and rusted. like i said, every car has it ailments, but german cars have got to be top of the tree really, sure the germans cant win wars but they do know how to put good cars together and make the best porn.
lotusless Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 all diesels rattle though but seriously though vw know how to make a car! i've had a few dailys in my time older + newer one's they have all been really good + i really rate the engine's. i heard the really new one's are not so good though? build quality i think, a quick story for ya i used to be a recovery driver + one day picked up a doctor in his mk2 golf, the alternator had just gone + he was telling me its the first time it had ever let him down this was an 84 car + he had it from new!!!! he had changed batteries, tyres, brakes + the usual sevice bits but the mileage was on 260k when i recovered it! this was only a couple of years ago + i said why dont you buy a new golf he said he could but why should he? probably still going now oh yeh i jump started it + the engine was sweet on it too, but the car looked a pile of shite... + i did recovery for years + i didn't go out to that many vw's compared to other makes (VAUXHALLS!!!!! )
mk1super Posted December 30, 2008 Author Report Posted December 30, 2008 Right an update of symptoms When the cars cold its sometimes needing two cranks to start, when it starts theres a metal sound like light grinding noise when clutch is pushed in before engaging 1st when the car warms up sound is gone

mk3cokebottle Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Right an update of symptoms When the cars cold its sometimes needing two cranks to start, when it starts theres a metal sound like light grinding noise when clutch is pushed in before engaging 1st when the car warms up sound is gone thrust bearing start the car normally sit in it and push the clutch in and out a few times without engaging any gears , if the sound goes intermittent when you push in and out the bearing is fooked

I've never owned a VW but I've test driven the ones my brother brings home from work....He's a VW technician They build some wicked motors and I considered buying a new Golf for work purposes only for the reliability Oh my Dad had an 1985 Merc 210 petrol van, which was fully loaded (weight not toys ) he kept it from new for 9 years and that covered over 300,000 miles when he sold it. The only time that let him down was when it jammed in reverse in Temple Meads Station It's a German thing....they know how to build cars that last forever I' still kill for a Corrado G60...mmmmm!!
Chris! Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 VW's are amazing!! Dad runs them, he buys them new, does about 200,000 miles then gets a new one. All the Transporters he's ever owned are still on the road and a couple are on 300,000+(on the original engine!!) he's never had any problems with them, only ever service's. Dads mate runs Golfs and has done for years, they're so reliable . Beetles and splittys, well they're not quite so reliable .

taz_991 Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 i personaly think vw produce some mental cars, the build quality is great. there safe too, i was in a crash monday evening in a y reg polo which rolled over on its arse end, inside of the car isnt affected at all. if i was to have a modern car i would definatly go for vw just for the safety side of things. cheers phil
evil knievel Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 i know the most important thign about vw's. they are shit (but i do like lupos) the new VW transporters are the best vans we've had since our MK1./2 transits we have 2 at the moment, 56 and 57 plate and they are strong but im afraid i have no idea about your rattle
mk1super Posted December 31, 2008 Author Report Posted December 31, 2008 Right i popped round an fired up polo to see for meself, the sound is like a rattling/light grating sound, i popped clutch in and out and it made no difference at all to sound
PAUL MANN Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 which side does it sound like its coming from
stevepeanut Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 had 2 beetles both 1303, paid £1000 for the pair. ran em around until it was mot time and they needed about £1000 of welding each and one needed a new engine. Sold the pair, one with no mot, and one with a couple of months left on and still got the £1000 back. Had a scirocco scala, which totally rocked, wasnt very fast but probs one of the best handling cars I ever owned. My mate swore by VWs, used to run old polos and jettas, and rat the arse off them, he used to park in the pub by not using the brakes and letting it bouce off a stone wall, we all got out laughing it was a tough old car.
