On the way back to Kent from Santa Pod, I got stuck in horrific traffic in my Mk 2 Tina.

The temperature gauge didn't go up much and it didn't boil over. However, after lots of traffic it won't tick over and will eventually die and not start until it cools down for 10 minutes. It has done it before.

What dya reckon?

Fuel vaporising?

Coil breaking down?

I can't remember if I've got that thick rubber block under the carb. Does that stop fuel boiling in the float bowl?

I did stick a new condenser on last time it happened.

So.... probably fuel.

Why has it only started doing it this year, and any suggestions on ow to stop it.

Don't see why it should suddenly need an electric fan.

A decent rad and an electric fan will help prevent problems in the future.

 

We do a rad for modified Anglias which is a high density triple core with a fanswitch mounted in the bottom tank, this brings the fan in and out just like a modern car.

 

 

I guess two reasons for why it has 'suddenly' start doing it would be there have been some of the hottest days on record this year and also as time goes by your rad and block 'fur' up with rust particles and crap from the water, just look in a kettle. This restricts the flow of water and the cooling system isnt working at peak efficiency.

 

I know most antifreezes claim to have rust inhibitors in there but how effective they are is anyones guess.

 

Also if the rad and block are original to the car there is no way of telling how many years it was run without anti freeze, back in the day people only used to run it in the winter and ran ordinary water in the summer months.

 

 

 

Try taking the rad out and back flushing it and then also while its out try and give the block a flushing too, this could help, oh and do the heater matrix if you can.

i had that a few years ago on my mk1 escy.

turned out to be condenser

 

had that 2 weeks ago!

 

condenser packed up on me! had to call the AA out and by pure luck he had one in the van. now i carry a spare condener in the car because they are prone to packing up.

I know my elec fuel pump starts knocking it's bollox off when sittin in hot traffic, it was bad going home from Ford Fair.....Oh and an fooked oil soaked clutch plate didnt help either PMSL :lol:

Fuel vapourisation for sure...if its any consolation even the concours cars have been known to conk out...I don,t think they anticipated the M25/M1 traffic back in the 60s ! make sure you have that block is in place (best to get the modern weber part (doesn,t swell up and buckle the carb baseplate) and if you want upgrade your cooling as well , I found replacing the old aeroplane prop two blade metal fan blade for a multiblade plastic fan helped...!

The only thing with increasing the 'power' of the engine fan is its sapping horsepower.... :wink:

On the way back from the Ace I got stuck in behind an accident on the M20 and it got a bit hot again!

Sounded like it was out of fuel. Took top off carb and there was hardly any fuel in there, and what was there was virtually boiling.

Bent tab on floats for higher level and no problems since. Revs much higher too, so must have starved of fuel at top end even when not really hot :)
