Hi this has probably been asked a million times before, but I couldn't find the answer so here goes.

At the moment I have a 2litre pinto and T9 from a late model capri in my car and would like to swap for a V6, I want to keep the gearbox as it's in good nick and I don't have to worry about sorting out a new prop either. I don't want an efi unit carbs are the only way but have been told my biggest problem is matching the splines and that only the 2.8 would fit as the essex is only geared up to take a four speed.

Any info help on this matter would be greatfully received...

cheers

You could fit an Essex to a five speed type nine but you need an adapter plate fitted to the essex bellhousing, or if you can source a bellhousing from an early granada these do the job but usually fetch over £100.

I wouldn`t use you box though as the V6 Type nine is different (input shaft length) and slightly stronger.

You mean the V4 bell housing right? That's what I needed to fit between a 2.8 type 9 and an essex when I did it a few years ago. 14.7mm needed to be cut off the input shaft but I can't remember there being any problems with the splines. That said are there differences in the number of splines between the 2 litre T9 and the 2.8 T9?

Oh and one more thimg to consider before you drop that weighty v6 in, the pinto can be uprated to output the same as an essex without much expenditure.

Cheers guys think I might try and trackdown a engine and gearbox combo. Not so worried about the weight as it's going in a model T was going down the rover v8 route but seeing as I already had the T9 thought the V6 would do the job and look right nice compared to the pinto..

Why dont you get a 2.8 5spd capri box and bellhousing, job done

Because that won`t fit an Essex engine. The bolt pattern on the back of the Essex is different to the Cologne
