To do bodywork repairs on your own car in your own garage?.I,e welding, filling etc.

Got a letter from the council today saying that a member of the public(my neigbour) had made complaints about "car bodywork repairs"being done at my address .

I,m only doing my fiesta not running a f$#@ing bodyshop :mad2:

I dont make alot of noise and i have always finished by around 8pm.

Does anyone know the legal finishing time for exess noise/DIY etc as i suddenly feel the need to hammer and grind things right up to this limit.

Rant over!

Seriously give a little to get a little, worked for me. Before my current neighbour moved in, my old neighbours were a couple in there 70s and i'd do there garden for em help them any way i could, and they not once ever complained about the noise of me bike or me working on it. I was proper gutted when they moved into sheltered housing cos ive a right numpty staying next door now

It's not illegal to do repairs to your own car Dave and as long as you don't take the mickey with the time you finish up.

If I was you i would ask your council department that contacted you for what they feel is a reasonable time to finish up, the other thing I would do is keep a record of when you work in the garage and times because I would imagine that is what your neighbour is doing, the twat!.

dave i had that when i lived round the block from you i just said i aint earning money as their my own cars as long as you keep the noise down they cant touch you as its your own motors if any compliants should be made it should be about the jags sitting out side of the saddlers house mate

I,m probably more annoyed that the spineless twats could,nt talk to me about any issues as i,m usually quite approachable ,its the annonymous phone call bit that gets me wound up.Not the first time either as last year i was supposidly making loads of noise one sunday all day.Pissed on their bonfire though as i was at the classic ford show all day.

Cheers Rog,The jag collection adds a touch of class to the estate

Also last Sunday night the house the other side of me had all its windows broken during some drunken confrontation(not me) and did i complain about the noise at 1,30am when workmen were boarding up the windows?

well not really i just had a pleasant conversation with them and they agreed to to it the next day. :)

I always try to be reasonable in the amount of time I spend making a racket but I also try to tie it in when others are making a noise. Mowing lawns, kids screaming, loud music etc. Try to limit to a couple of hours every few days at odd times.

m8, ignore the letter, find out the correct times at which you are allowed to make excess noise, it may be earlier and later than you think.

Then make a point of grinding metal as early as possible to as late a possible as loudly as possible just to make a point.. Its a free country (almost) and you are entitled to make a noise

Cheers Steve,I have calmed down now and will just carry on as normal as after thinking about it i,ve done nothing wrong as although i may be outside until around 8pm i never use noisey tools after around 5pm and even then the garage door is shut to keep down the noise. The wife cannot even hear me and our house is alot closer than anyone else,s.

And besides i dont do things(often)deliberateley to annoy people ,I,m just a bloke with a hobby just trying to get through life with the minimum amount of fuss.

The anonymous phone call is I'm afraid, a sign of the times. The neighbour who has complained probably doesn't know you personally and has therefore no way of knowing whether you'll by understanding of his complaint or be a complete nutcase who'll either attack him personally or slash his tyres / smash his windows. So rightly or wrongly he chooses the path that presents the least risk to him and lets the authorities deal with it.

I'm afraid I'm much the same in the vicinity of my own home, your property is just too vulnerable to tackle people who are making a nuisance of themselves in person (not that I'm saying you are).

Cowardly? Maybe, but I don't care. At the end of the day I'm not laying myself open to stabbing by some psycho that thinks it's ok to do what 99% of the population isn't ok with.

I do see your point to an extent but i still feel that most problems can be sorted with a good conversation to come to an amicable agreement.

This leaflet gives a good idea of the wooliness of noise laws

I would base your response around this.

Get in touch with the council, state that you're not running a private business, but a hobbyist. Give them the general details of what you doing (replacing a few panels) and what times you expect it to happen. Also, express your disappointment at the fact that the complainant felt unable to talk to you about the situation in the first instance.

Then keep a "noise diary" of when you are doing stuff. If the complainant makes progresses this further, but their reported times don't corroborate with yours, you weaken their case, because they're assuming noise coming from someone else is yours. Or they're just making it up.......

Fuk neighbours i had it with them so i promised id kill them and there pets and burn there cars if they ever spoke to me again and ya know what it worked

Cheers for that  i,ll just carry on as normal as i,ve had a word tonigt with a couple of people who live roughly the same distance away and they never even knew i was doing car repairs in the garage.I dont think noise is the issue ,as the letter never mentioned noise ,just car repairs.
