tom28 Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 hi, does anyone know where i can get mex wings from? do people sell pattern ones? i saw normal wings on ebay but there £260 a piece... any advice? thanks
tom28 Posted March 22, 2009 Author Report Posted March 22, 2009 would want metal ones, dont do fiberglass..
cjay2004 Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 there waz a pair of new mk1 mex wings on ebay, £1200 though???
emu Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 would want metal ones, dont do fiberglass.. I think you will when you see what metal ones go for Old Fords 'Glass wings seem to have a good reputation and have been fitted by quite a few people on here
Admin Vista Posted March 22, 2009 Admin Report Posted March 22, 2009 would want metal ones, dont do fiberglass.. Nobody makes reproduction mex wings, there have been several attempts but none have suceeded. NOS ones come up on ebay from time to time but will sell for upwards of £800 and as said above sometimes a lot more. So you have three or four options 1. Standard wings 2. Keep your eyes peeled for some useable 2nd hand ones. Even rubbish one with good arches would do so you can graft them on to standard wings 3. Fibreglass (which you've already vetoed) 4. Standard wings (new or 2nd hand) with bubble arches all round. Bubbles are still available in steel from expressed panels
bigdaz27 Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 no one makes steel ones any more well only for stuped money and thats exspresd steel panels and they only do the standard ones they used to do the mex arches on there owne ive never used the fiberglass ones but from what ive seen they look prettey good http://steelpanels.co.uk/

4parajon Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 My mate has a pair of genuine Ford one's, still with the ford badge on, think he's after best part of a grand for them tho.
Admin Vista Posted March 23, 2009 Admin Report Posted March 23, 2009 how much are standard wings and where can i get them from?? what to most people have when they restore mk1s? kinda likea vote ere Expressed panels list standard wings as POA, I don't know if they keep them in stock or make them to order though http://www.steelpanels.co.uk/escort1ec.html There's one here too http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/escort-mk1-mk-1-o ... 240%3A1318

Scott W Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Speak to the guy who runs oldpartsstore, I had a conversation with him last year and he explained that there is someone whao has spent a lot of time and money manufacturing the pressings for new wings.
tom28 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Report Posted March 23, 2009 sounds intresting.. mex wings right?.. gota number?
BIGKEV Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 This is the bit that really gets my goat - when did our hobby turn into such an expensive industry - paying £1000 for a pair of wings is just bloody ludicrous saying that if some fool is willing to pay for it its their money - Ebay has killed our little hobby and it seems that unless you are minted you are out of the game . really pisses me off. If I had money - I would still think the same Who else has thought that they were getting ripped off due to "scene Tax"?
tom28 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Report Posted March 23, 2009 id agree with that, especially mk1 bits!! just the way it is i guess they just get rarer n rarer, i always say i was born in the wrong year myself lol good for selling on ebay though
Admin Vista Posted March 23, 2009 Admin Report Posted March 23, 2009 This is the bit that really gets my goat - when did our hobby turn into such an expensive industry - paying £1000 for a pair of wings is just bloody ludicrous saying that if some fool is willing to pay for it its their money - Ebay has killed our little hobby and it seems that unless you are minted you are out of the game . really pisses me off. If I had money - I would still think the same Who else has thought that they were getting ripped off due to "scene Tax"? Try looking at from another point of view though Kev. When I sold my first OSF (Mk1 facelift GXL capri) I'd owned it about nine years and spent about the first 4 years and in excess of £10k restoring and uprating it (at mid 90's prices and earnings) when I sold it in 2003 it fetched a measly £3000. Now you've probably put quite a bit of money into your car right? At least now you stand a chance of recouping it if your were forced to sell for some unforeseen reason.
tom28 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Report Posted March 23, 2009 very true and that's why i love ebay for selling
bigdaz27 Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 what makes me laugh is they only charge £350 for mk1 cortina wings i cant see how mk1 escort wings are more exspensive they said to me they used to get there standard wings from a company in italy witch most companys were charging about £50 for them and expresd steel panels were selling them for about £120 if i rember right they used to do mex wings for £250
BIGKEV Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 but Scott - I have only Time invested in my cars - thats how I look at it - yes there has been money saved and spent but I like to think that the car was built not bought - sure you have to buy certain things and considering the financial hell we have been through - the easy thing would have been to sell the car but at the end of the day Its my toy - blood sweat and tears all round so I do not intend to sell ever - the fact that the prices of these cars has been driven up by certain figures and places means that the average jo has to fork out a horrific amount of money for what is essentially a bit of metal. If I had a Mk1 and I wanted a mex wing then I would actually have a damn good go at making one myself - much more satisfying even if it took 10's of hours. did you ever see that program about Cuba where they have no spare parts so they make do and mend - making a wing for a 53 chevy out of a roof of a scrapped car makes me think Wow proper craftsmanship - I certainly dont think that when I see a set of rusty wings go for 1000 plus on Evil bay I must admit that I have sold things on Ebay myself and some crazy fools have paid a stupid amount of money for my wares but I also think that its these fools that are putting the price up for everyone else. I hate money by the way
tom28 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Report Posted March 23, 2009 and who say's money can't by you happyness..lol
Fishtailparka Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Old Ford auto fibreglass wings are very difficult to tell from metal ones, except they don't rust. The steel panel ones are not a very good copy, and it was steel panels themselves that told me that. As they stopped making Mk1 Escorts over 30 years ago, it is hardly surprising that nobody makes the metal ones anymore, and what few are left are bound to cost a lot. As for ebay, it is bloody marvelous for people restoring Escorts. There is no way I would have been able to find the bits to build my cars without it.
tom28 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Report Posted March 23, 2009 hmm dunoo what to do now... id prefer metal ones alot more..
Fishtailparka Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 So would i, but not at those prices. I put f/g on mine and have no regrets at all.
