Retro-gone. Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 almost completed the 500 mile service after the engine rebuild, i was totally shocked to find quite a few fasteners loose in engine bay, on the rebuild i treble checked everything for tightness cos im like that but ive just found both manifold bolts/nuts loose, rocker cover bolts loose, the alternator bracket had completely lost one of its m10 bolts and the other two were finger tight.
stevepeanut Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 looked at my engine bay the other day, no nut on my alternator bracket bolt, the bolt was just sitting there rattling, god knows how it hadnt jumped out
Supercharged Nat Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 the manifold ones loosen because of expansion and contraction in the metals. the rocker cover ones settle due to the cork gasket. idealy the alternator bracket and engine mount bolts etc would have spring washers with them, to keep them from vibrating loose. I found the same with mine after a total rebuild- i guess thats why its so important to follow the correct torques for the engine internals etc.
bigdaz27 Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 i had a vibrating under my car and found 3 of the 4 bolts that hold the gearbox to the bell housing had fell out one of them fooked of frew the bell housing
Retro-gone. Posted March 26, 2009 Author Report Posted March 26, 2009 i checked them but were ok. ive got new spring washers on everything now but il still be checking em again in a coupla hundred miles.

Retromotorsport Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 biggest reason for nuts and bolts coming undone ..... ??? huge blokes hanging off huge ratchets and spanners over tightning everything . A bolt has a self tightening elasticity ... by over tightening them your lose this..and it rattles loose. check your Haynes manuals and look at the torque settings
Retro-gone. Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 i do mate, in fact my mates take the piss outta me for using the torque wrench on everything lol, im putting it down to the stainless spring washers, i remember reading somewhere that they dont have the same spring tension as mild steel ones, ive also locktightened the major fasteners so il check again in a hundred miles or so
Jonb Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 Haha know what you mean, on my old escort the starter motor fell out yep, the racket at 80 plus is untrue
