Admin Mk2Jo Posted December 13, 2006 Admin Report Posted December 13, 2006 Let's face it .... money is tight for most of us and there just never seems to be enough to cover all the things that you want to do to your Old Skool Ford ... so, if you had to make a choice what would it be: Bodywork or engine ..... would you build a car to look good or go well ?? Discuss ......
Tom Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 i tried for a mixture of both. i'm tight as when it comes to spending money i always look for the cheaper option. i think i only spent a grand on the body work inc paint but that was over 8 months. then with the engine, that was a bargain too - got a whole car for 200 quid with the engine then slowly added go faster bits as time went on. love a sleeper but, with my car, i want it to look presentable too
MightySprocket Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 bodywork! even the most standard cars get respect if they are turned out well enough and you don't need to drive fast if your cars sharp enough
Wessie Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 sleeper look ! make it go and scare all the chavs @ the lights but do some bodywork so it dont rust
mk2_escort_chick Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 Sleeper all day long baby! I'd rather have the power
RETRO_AL Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 i went for bodywork first, my engine will be last to get some goodies
paulfl Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 Get body work done and slowly put some horses into her as time goes on!!!!
Burns Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 i'd go for the engine first, then the bodywork. the other half on the other hand would have me make it look pretty first
105Nick Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 I got pissed off with all the ripples in the escort which put me off for a while, as I wanted a car to look as smart as it goes (this was pre-OSF days so my only reference to other OSFers at the time was what was on the cover of classic ford - quite de-moralising) especially when I had a break in by gyppos who dropped my generator on the boot, denting the straightest panel on the car just to add insult to injury When I saw the Anglia in its original, sun bleached paint I just thought it'd look so cool slammed with a hot x-flow, for a ratty sleeper, with 2000E internals in the stock box to keep the old 'magic wand' gearlever, until I saw the prices of suspension gear for anglia's which are crazy. The engine gave up, so it got a mandatory rebuild - twice - top end when the head gasket went, then again when the rings sent the whole lot south. Ah well live and learn. I've put too much into it to fit a x-flow now, and the rot in the pannels needs attention, so it looks like it'll end up being the complete car being redone in time but for now, I'm trying to get it up and running and then do a quick strip down to get the body tidied up.
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 You could actually apply the same thinking to women. And my vote wouldn't change!

Mr Sam Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 id have something like mick rodgers mk3 cortina if i could afford it
bomber1 Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 id have something like mick rodgers mk3 cortina if i could afford it just got that dvd A CENTURY OF FAST FORDS between micks mk3 and the 170mph yellow mk1
Dom Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 I'm biased towards performance since hardly any of our OSFs are very pretty lol. Both appearance and performance impress people but I don't think there are many things more satisfying than having the last laugh
Admin Vista Posted December 13, 2006 Admin Report Posted December 13, 2006 With a modern car I'd spend my money on making it quick and handle better, but looking largely standard. But with an OSF I'd be making sure it wasn't going to fall apart on me first, we all know how they rust! So whilst I may not spend all my bucks making it look the dogs danglies, it'd certainly be structurally sound of bodywork brakes and suspension before I uprated it mechanically.
Johnson Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 power not paint! As Mick rogers would say
deluxe Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 would do it sequentally as money pile up First weld all the rot and primer so it wont rust Then a decent engine Finally a respray
Guest M.Bird DOHC Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 Dont think i need to answer Snotter that goes well everytime the feeling you get when you do a modern GTi is the nuts! Any arguements ask Tom bmw M3 M25
tazrocks88 Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 With a modern car I'd spend my money on making it quick and handle better, but looking largely standard. But with an OSF I'd be making sure it wasn't going to fall apart on me first, we all know how they rust! i agree but i also want to have my car look like a mex then when i have the money to insure a modifyed car i will put a bigger engine in it so i will technically have a 1300 4 door mex lol
deluxe Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 If you mean making it look/sound faster than it really is, not saving it from the tinworm, than I definitly against doing that first.
kms Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 This is a topic that we discuss on a regular basis - we have certain friends who just don't get the idea of a sleeper I think we have come up with a comprimise for all of our osf. The Cortina is a sleeper. Rust in places, looks a bit of a shed but it's so much fun - not quick but it's getting there - and we only buy things for the running of the car - shocks, springs, big valves, cam, airfilter etc. My mk1 escort will probably look the part and the engine and stuff will come later - I've got a friend who builds engines - so not all that expensive! But I do want it painted before it goes back on the road. And the mk2 escort. Well that's a different story all together. Until we have the money to do everything that we want - exterior / engine then that will sit and wait - not going to do half a job on that - she deserves the best. I get sad and excited when I think about them like this - stuck in storage and not being driven, but then they're mine all mine (and his!) so one day I will be in them.

Rich Sav Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 i think u got 2have a bit of both even the money out
Fiesta Steve Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 I voted for the look like shit go like stink option. I love building engines and trying to extract every last ounce from them. I love racing weather its on the road (private of course) or the strip. My XR2 looks a proper heap (it is) but love to pull up at the lights and embarass evo's and such like. You can't beat a traffic light grand prix
LUKE261 Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 good question, normally i'd say sleeper all the way however i must admit i have chosen 2 spend money on my bodywork on my car first, followed power afterwards. not normally the choice for me!!! i have proved myself wrong
