I really feel gutted for the owner. Im close to crying just seeing the pics and have no idea what I would do if it was mine.

 

My deepest sympathy goes out to the owner and I hope his insurance covered the car more than enough to repair the damage or pay to build another one

 

I carry one of those £16 halfords fire extinguishers bolted to the passenger side of the gearbox tunnel but after seeing that I might invest in a bigger one to keep in the boot should anything happen and the little one cant control it

Likewise, I have two in the car but am probably going to go for a fixed system on project van.

 

 

You WILL be having a 2 1/4 plumbed in system, its a stipulation in the small print on all cars leaving here.

 

Allthough the banned Halon ones are the best, an AFF one will kill a fire if it hasnt taken hold. On non competition cars i pint the interior nozzel at the electrics under the dash, obviously the more expensive , larger systems which have more nozzels, are better, and still come in cheaper than a repaint, retrim and rebuild.

 

So, think.... do i buy that 'want that for my car' item or an extinguisher? because if your car catches fire, that must have bling item will go up in smoke.

 

All I can hope for this car, is the insurance wasnt scrimped on.. it scares me sometimes when people say they have saved themselves 20-30 quid on insurance, as i always wonder whats missing from the cover.

Paying that little bit extra can really soften the blow when this happens. Knowing that your car will be taken to a body shop of your choice and returned later looking just as good, if not better than when you first MOT'ed it after building it.

Halon is banned but there are other gas drench systems that aren't, FM200 or Novec1230 for instance?

Halon extinguishers are the only ones i carry in any of my cars for the simple reason that they are the best way to put out fires full stop even if they are banned. I was very lucky to get hold of 14 hand held halon bottles from the guy who sirviced the extingushers at work a few years back. AFFF extinguishers arnt worth a shit, me and 3 outher lads ( all of us avid rally fans and owners of rally cars) had to put out a turbo fire/brake fluid fire on a Grp n subaru impreza at rainham a few years ago and we had to use 8 hand held AFFF bottles to put out what was a fairley small fire And the plumed in AFFF in the car was next to no use. If he had been in the middle of nowhare and he had that fire the chap would have lost the car.

I really feel for the owner. I couldn't believe it when I saw the pictures. It must be absolutely gutting to see that happen.

Just missed this as we joined the M1 via the M45.

Absolutely gutted for the owner. At least no one was hurt, at the end of the day a car can ( hopefully) be rebuilt, not so easy to rebuild the human body.

 

Serves as a lesson to all to keep a fire extinguisher handy in your car, in a lot of cases it probably won't stop the inevitable, but every little helps.

 

I hope he manages to rebuild and get the car back on the road.

its my bosses son in laws, it took him 5 years to build just got it MOt'd by my mate the other week it had a plummed in fire extingusher . aparently a seal went on the fuel rail and sprayed onto the manifold. he had his young lad in the car aswel. no one was hurt tho real shame bout the car.

glad they werent hurt - Its only a car. - it can be fixed.

 

I say this as its taken me 4 years to build my car yet if my daughter was with me - I would nt give a monkeys about the car.

 

 

Hope he gets it sorted as soon as he can.
