my pc died yesterday, it powered up but i was greeted with a blue screen with alsorts of codes and shite on it, i mustve restarted it 20 times but still got the blue screen, i got annoyed and did a 'jerry lee lewis' on the keyboard and fook me its working again

im on with getting it backed up, its not something i can do myself so ive got to wait for my mate coming back off hols. but it does seem to be running smooth, i did a full scan on it this morning and defragged , could that have cured the problem?

if you are go in to control panel then go into administrative controls then go into event viewer you will see a list of errors etc and it will tell you what went wrong......normally their is a code if you click on the code it will go to windows page and will tell you what caused the error...blue screen of death etc

just tried that and i dont understand it lol., one thing ive noticed is at the bottom of my screen theres a little pic of 2 screens with a red cross thro them and it says 'local area connection, a network cable is unplugged'.

Retro, hardware failure can be intermittent, sometimes it works perfect for a week then BAM, it crashes. Hardware crashes normally give "blue screens of death", much more regularly than software errors. And software errors give constant blue screens instead of intermittent. I hope you can follow that! Overheating dodgy hardware can/will/might crash quicker, so let it cool down for an hour and try again.

 

I'll try compare, Its a bit like a dodgy fuel pump or starter motor, sometimes it works then sometimes it doesnt, and you have to keep trying or give it a tip to get it going. The main thing is, a piece of hardware is most likely dying in your computer. So you should backup ASAP.

 

Normally to copy and paste your "My Documents" folder onto an external harddisk backs up a lot of people's personal data, but not always, some people are messy and store their data everywhere, so best get someone who knows what their at to search your disk for everything.

 

A defrag wont help fix your dodgy hardware, it will only re-arrange incomplete files into complete files so that they can be read faster (continuously instead of split up) from the disk.

 

For the other guy, best to set the computer to defrag and go to bed

Again, this CAN be due to overheating, ive seen it many times where a computer is in a dusty environment and the heatsinks get clogged and no-longer do their job. If you know the environment is dusty then its definitely worthwhile to check this out.

 

If you have a friend with an air compressor and blower gun, take it to him/her, open the side of the computer and get the blow gun at it. Beware, this can cause SERIOUS clouds of dust so do to this outside or you'll be coughing for a while. Now the computer can breath again and keep cool.

 

As obvious as it is to blow the heatsink of the computer, clean, also make sure to blow the power supply clean, as it can clog also.

Lol.. its a relatively new heat sink .. i hoover it all the time so im not sure thats the problem But i will take it apart again and make sure its clean. Thank you

with hard drives you may have bead sectors....which will get worse and worse to it wont work again....you can fix them,....but it dont last for long.....

 

has red rocket says they can get hot if clogged so have a look and give a good clean

 

one thing most people dont relise that most programsthatyou install will auto run everythime thepc starts.....even if you are not using it....also its another way spyware etc can invest your pc to the point you have problems doing anything.......also deleting interet temp files regualry has they can mount up very quick and bog the pc down

My PC was doing that, I changed the powerpack.. still did it! I ended up taking out the harddrive & dumping it

When my old PC did this it was the fan that had packed up. I just fitted 2 in its place & all was ok again
