yep the bdg has a Jack shaft, but I have also seen them drive direct from a cam for the dissy, the Jack shaft is a idea borrowed from the Lotus twink, cant remember if the block is machined to the back to carry a cam, or the last bearing is deleted, I kbow there is no facility to run followers,

the piper "thing" was a alloy rocker cover with integeral webs to support the rocker shaft, al the rockers were then assembled inside the cover and then bolted to the head, adjustment was done by removing a screw on lid that fitted the cover,

Just thought of a possible odd thing, BDAs were designed around originally the pre X flow block, I think the L block was the desired item, I think the Cosworth DFV engine was built initially with modified BDA heads, have a look at the rocker covers.

o right, can imagin why it took ages to time up !!! did it give much, if any performance gain ?? :?

no performance gain, better off with steel posts and a top strap,

Just remembered why you cant build a big BDG blocked X flow, , the crank throw hits with the cam

 What a silly conversion then  interesting though

Whats a BDG's stroke then ??

as 84mm xflow cranks are availiably (= 2L xflow)

and i have read of people using festia desiel cranks (85mm)

O and fleet model cortinas are a strange thing

Dunno what the stroke is on the BDG,

Fleet Models, Cant agree more, makes me wonder why, with ford and their penny pinching go to the expense of making new grilles, and basically new dashboards without the glovebox, got to be an expensive option, Dont forget, the anglia was made in a fleet model too, I can see the logic here, borrow all the bits off the anglia van, and use them in a basic car, that makes sense,

Going back a little further, did you know the 100e and mk1 & 2 zephyrs/consuls heaters were an option, twas when men were men, and days before central heating, I can still remember getting up in the morning and drawing pictures in the frost on the inside of the windows in our old house

Back to Xflows, an old trick to get a big stroke steel crank, Datsun 160B, 180B, 200B cranks, they can all be made to fit a XFlow with a bit of machining!!!!!!

Also the bonnet badge is stupid, they made a completly different badge, im sure if would have been much cheaper to use the normal badge or even just leave it off :D

Yep heard of that too :)

arnt the cranks quite hard to get hold of now though :(

Just a random thought, wonder if you could use a BDA Jackshaft pully to run a xflow cam ??

You would obviously need to work out the ratios to get the crank pully ratios to make sure it would work right.

I know minis have a similar conversion

All thats needed is somthing like a Pinto vernier adapted to fit the Jackshaft drive and fit the pinto style botton toothed pulley, no ratios to work out, 2:1 also if you used a wider than stock bottom drive you could run a Drysump pump

ahhh cool :D didnt know it was 2:1

couldnt you just use all the bda bits??

the crank pully :

has 20 teeth, and the jack drive has 40 (if i van count)

and talking about runnign a drysump off it, check this out :?

ahhhh, The BDA has a diffrent crank iirc? isnt the noes a bit longer or something ?

although, burton sell a 1.5 inch belt drive kit for water pump[/ alternater..

could proably run it off that??

Now you see, this is some interesting old school tech'. Not the sort of stuff that gets talked about nowadays but folks seem to forget that people were modding cars of this ilk long before there were any off the shelf parts.

Good knowledge Ian, and thank you for sharing 8)

I never realised 'fleet' cars are different, does anyone have any pics of standard and fleet details?

heres a link to BSC, shows the difference between Mk1 Fleet steel grilles and a normal pre Aeroflow, they were only fitted with Rubber mats, no sound deadening and I think no underseal either the dash panel had no facility for a glove box, no hole at all, I think the front parcel shelf was deleted as well, the dash should be steel on the Mk1 without a crashpad, same as the Mk2 cortina too except I think the Mk2s had a crashpad, some possibly came with silver painted bumpers too, mk2 had a normal style grille, TBH I think I have only ever seen 1 Mk2 fleet car, and that was on EBay. so Im guessing they are pretty rare, but there are a few Mk1s about. as well as Base model anglias

You need the 1600 diesel crank, I don't think the stroke is as much as that! I have one here, the rods are destined for my pinto 8)

There is no side on the block so there is no where for the pushrods to go...

It's not that unusual to run the dry sump pump off the end of the cam, although I've not seen one, the timing cover does look funny :? Burton list the pumps

What about the Broadspeed pre-xflow heads

IF i had a cortina / anglia. I would be saving my pennies !!! (set of downdraught carbs on one of them.... OOF!!! :ykt: )

These are tempting! :P:ykt::thumbsup:
