V8ian Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Thank you for taking the time to upload all of these amazing photos and info. That Big Bertha makes me go all funny inside, amazing car When the car was in "Race Trim" with the big red Griffon on the side and just a small bit of colour the car was stunning, I think I only ever saw it race once, in fact I think it lasted 6 races berore it was totaled, I cant remember there being any pics of it during or after the crash, only reports and quotes, one from Frank Costin was how about how well the car survived the crash and the deformable sections had worked and how the driver got out without any injuries, THB it was very quickly forgotten about, and there was no attempt to rebuild it, making me think that it was not as good as it should have been, hence the birth od Baby Bertha, made up from the reminants of Big Bertha, DTV never missed a race as they still had the "Old Nail" which was one of those cars with an incredable history of wins and crashes, Gerry was a bit of a Do or Die in his younger days, I have in a mag a picture of the results of a crash at brands, where the Firenza was on its roof, looks like no front cage was fitted, the rear is burning quite well and a marshal is pulling Gerry out by his feet.
Mr2Caps Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Gerry Marshall one of my motorsport heros I have the memory of him throwing Ivan Duttons Alvis "grey lady" around Goodwood at the revival etched into my brain!
Toby Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Gerry Marshall one of my motorsport heros I have the memory of him throwing Ivan Duttons Alvis "grey lady" around Goodwood at the revival etched into my brain! Mine too - i saw him drifting a Lotus Cortina with a Nick Stag prepared engine aound St. Mary's at a revival - such cool car control - and just to please the crowds as he was uncatchable. He was lapping in the low 1.30's on historic dunlops. My claim to fame is he spoke to me at Brighton speed trails a few years back - he said to me "I used to race these" I said "I know who you are!!!" star struck! He was really enthusistic. They ran Baby Burther down there that year with him driving..... Gerry Marshall R.I.P
