i think the sj's are the best all round offroader, turn the standard steels round so the inner side faces outwards, it gives you 6 inch more width on standard, stick a set of chunky tyres on, but dont jack it up because they just fall over and break transmission mounts :thumbsup:

I too have been thinking about doing some off roading ever since i bought my nissan terrano

Its got BF Goodrich nobblys, side steps, bull bars and spot lights and its a short wheel base with full mot and 6 month tax full service history, i paid £600.

It looks pretty mean and the farther in-laws a farmer so ive tested it across his fields for laugh.

I am thinking of whipping the side steps off, fitting a snorke and going propper off road

after reading loads of offroad reviews and looking on ebay, these terranos do seem to be bloody good value for money, loads of decent ones under £1000, might get one of those myself

Dont forget that for a while the Nissan Terrano was also badged as Ford Maverick

yeah but they are absolute dogshit offroad, torsion bar front suspension :? ??

plus when(not if) the gearbox starts acting up due to water ingress they are an absolute arse to change

buy a battered discovery diesel(plenty about for sub 1k) and see if you take to it

As said terranos have a problem with the 'box, not from water ingress If you use the wrong oil the additives eat away the bearings, Of course most garages use what they have in a tub and motor factors hand out boggo 80w/90 GL5. ( i discovered this after spulrging out on the expensive stuff that was wrong)

I had one well a maverick one of the early non intercooler ones. was a good driving yoke and ran on veg oil 50/50 with no problems.

as for being shite off road I've seen some tackle some good stuff and make it, there is definitely a difference of opinion between folk on their capability. Had I not lost my job mine would have hit the mud. Don't forget the LSD in the back as standard !!!

if your going to lift your disco mart look into a set of castor correcting radius arms, they tend to steer terible on road without them  QT ones are quite cheep.

yeh been there done that.

Personally Id use either a Suzuki SJ, vitara or a Suzuki Jimny.

Dont get a jeep cherokee as they suck. Ive heard Vauxhall Fronteras are pretty pants too.

Most people love landys but Im not a fan. They just dont do anything for me. Overpriced if you ask me too.

Me and my dad went everywhere in his Jimny and never once got it stuck. brilliant thign and it even surprised a few landrover guys

Suzuki jeep, offroad tyres = job done! Save ther est of your cash for an old ford

johnston, thats an ace picture!

I am still undecided, on wether to get a small suzuki/diahatsu, or get something huge like a jeep or discovery. I use my pickup to move bike parts and other big things, so it would be nice to have something that'll carry big/heavy things like the pickup

I hear she was a good bit of kit and still done the school run :shock::shock:

Best bet is to hit up northwest4x4 and the difflock forums.

But beware you will get a lot of the land rover is best brigade.

the discos do tend to drive like blancmange and come standard with oil leaks, if they leave they factory without and one they go back in to get one

I would never say landies are best for the off roading, but they do have a good track record, and upgrades are endless, the best one I came up against was a merc G wagon lifted, simex boots and arb lockers all round, it was unstopable.
