would you feel guilty about breaking up an osf?

I am struggling with money, due to things going quiet at work. I can just afford to keep and run the cortina, but I cant afford to restore the capri as I planned. I dont really think I would get much for it in a private sale. Its a C reg 2.8, stripped out, no interior, not very nice overall and need lots and lots of welding. I would think I would be lucky to see £300 for it.

 

But I think if I broke it up I would see double that easy. Get money for the axle, the front billie struts, engine, doors, bonnet, boot, grill, spoiler.

 

But even if it got me a lot more money in bits, I kinda feel bad, cos its one less osf on the road, and its making me think I should sell it as it is even if I get less money.

 

What would you guys and gals do if you were in my shoes

1 take more money in bits but feel a bit bad

2 sell it for less but feel better that its still a car in one piece

I can sympathize with you mate, I have just took what can only be described as a finacial kicking off the tax man, and was touch and go if I had to sell both my OSF landy and every other possesion I've got.

In my opinion take the cash, we all gota live and sometimes cars etc come lower down the list, if the welding it needs is as much as you say then its nothing to feel bad about

Depends how much you need the money. I had a similar thing with my mk5 Cortina. It needed a bit of welding and a few other jobs but was no where near past it, but as they were jobs I didnt think I could do myself I decided to sell. I could have got more for breaking it, and maybe even more to a banger racer, but I sold it privately to Tiz on here as he said he was going to get it welded , resprayed and back on the road so I accepted £220 or it. I knew it was worth more in parts, but I wanted someone to get it back on the road. He soon had it back up for sale and made a profit on it without doing any work to it. If I really needed every last penny out of it then i'd have broken it, but if you can afford to let it go to an enthusiast for cheaper then that's what i'd do.

Always best to try and sell it on rather than break it (particually if the car is a scarce model).

 

One thing that you should remember is yes it may be worth more in bits but only if you can sell everything. what happens is someone breaks a car and they sell the gearbox, rear window and a door then they cant find anyone else who wants the other parts so they are now left with a load of parts and an incomplete car. Postage for heavy items can be a problem and alot of hassle to organise and if a person is tight for time aswell as money it can become a right pain of course there is pick up only but how many people close to where that person lives have the same car and want that part.

Break it and take the money.........lets be honest here thats what the person who buys it of you will do and he will have the profit, how many times have you heard the ....yes mate im going to restore it, only to find out a week later its been broken,

TBH unless there was only a handfull left i'd break it but then i break old fords all the time and sell the shells to banger racers, on the other hand the parts i sell keep many many more on the road so it's swings and roundabouts really, how rare is a 2.8i ?

seriously mate don't feel guilty about breaking it, most of us have done it and ALL of us have bought second hand spares for our cars and would be lost without them and in reality there are plenty of mk3 capris left. The people who should feel guilty in my mind are the ones who leave osf's on the driveway for years on end to rot away, and when you ask if the're for sale its the same old 'i'm gonna restore it' only for them to end in the scrap years down the line

I'd say do it m8. I've done it a couple of times and although it is sad to see one die, but as has been said - others will live, and you have a bit of dough around you

Wise words there. Aside from that, you won't see the money all at once. If it comes in £40-50 a time, or even a £100 or so for the big bits, you may need to spend it and by the time you have to get rid of the leftovers, you don't notice what you have made.

If it's a C reg 2.8 then has it still got it's LSD axle?

Worth about £450 to £500 on it's own, front legs/brakes £150 to £200 plus what ever else goes.

sold the lsd a while back for £500, running a 2.0 laser axle now

(looked quite good, that was summer 08 iirc, but it was PROPPER tatty, for example, the front corner of one of the wings was made out of resin it had had it)

 

the roof and A pillars are going on me harrier,

the innerwings are going on me dads mk2 rs2000,

the boot floor whent on me mates atmo mk1, and the rear parcel shelf might be going on it, and the seats have also been put in it

the engine and box went into a mk2 van,

the rear axel has been put aside so it can be wealded up if we want, or nick the 1300 CWP

front and rear screens have been put aside,

peadel box has been put in my other project

 

so tbh not much was left and its helped 5 cars, plus we have some more spares.

That's a different thing, if you already have places for a lot of it, have what's left of a Mk2 SWB transit outside who's parts have gone all over the place, I counted 6 vans to be helped.
