sarkie83 Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 Sorry if this sounds like a really stupid question, but whats the difference between one of these 'kits' and a shortened lever?
Finn Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Never had one of the kits, just sawed the lever down, has worked perfectly well for the last 10 years. Finn.
sambo Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 The kit includes a spacer and you need to modify your existing lever. The actual lever itself, is a rose-jointed jobbie and is much better. Usually when using the kit type, you'll have to be carefull when selecting first as you lose the 'push-down' action when selecting reverse. Go for the lever mate. Much better.

Finn. kinda what i was thinking as well! The kit includes a spacer and you need to modify your existing lever. The actual lever itself, is a rose-jointed jobbie and is much better. Much better. that explains why they are way more than the kits! Cheers..
SmokeEm Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 We use a Quaife lever. Well worth the £90 odd it was
Ken B Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Just bought my self a Quaife too. A lot of dough but beautiful peice of engineering.
emu Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 I used a kit on my gear lever. I modified it so that the grub screw that holds the new portion of lever to the old goes all the way through the shaft. Other than that, I havent had any problems with it at all. I have heard people say that the rose jointed ones buzz and resonate, but having never tried one I can neithre conjfirm or deny The reverse gate still works fine on my gearbox too
Noodles Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 The one I have from rally design buzzes like hell, do the quafe ones?
SmokeEm Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 The one I have from rally design buzzes like hell, do the quafe ones? Ours doesn't but Big G's does I think
Andrade Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Usually when using the kit type, you'll have to be carefull when selecting first as you lose the 'push-down' action when selecting reverse. I have a quaife quickshift leaver on my viva (to clear the handbrake) installed to an escort 1100 gearbox (integral bellhousing). I have the exact same problem you have mentioned here, I can put in reverse without pushing the leaver down. I got used to it but only because the noise of putting in reverse and putting in first is different (i dont have a stereo) any ideas why? its kind of... dangerous, especially after seeing my brother almost reversing into my estate The one I have from rally design buzzes like hell, do the quafe ones? mine buzzes too, but thats what free gear is there for!
Ken B Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Rally des ones buzz cos they have a 50p bearing in them. My Quaife, the reverse function works like it should. The only thing it was very tight in the hole in box, but i think that was down to a small burr on the box itself.
BIG G Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 My quaife lever buzzes like a vibrator in a bucket of bolts and i hate it
livewire7116 Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 the rose jointed ones are the way to go, it will be the best £50 you will ever spend, well next to by a tran-x box, they take some serious abuse, i used to have a kit on my mk2 when i was road rallying and broke it a few times.
