I agree with the majority. I think it is bad luck on your part. Expecting the seller to subsidise the repair cost is not reasonable. Its a car that is over 1/4 of a century old. I 50/50 expect them to break down when I drive them away.

Seems odd that he's not answering, but you will never know the truth, but i think that he probably didn't know anything about it ?

Perhaps the car was used locally and only on nice days then you suddenly asked it to do a 3 hours journey and it didn't like it ?

Did you stop every now and then and check oil & water etc ? You need to remember these are 20 -30 years old now and go wrong often !!!

I feel for you but i think i'd be with others peeed off but take it on the chin.

Here's one for you ....................

I

Thanks for yer educated response. Savvi..

I never..ever travel without tools...

and in this case due to restrictions on my journey to the car I was unable to carry my "Normal tool kit"

so I drove about 6 miles..ROUGHLY ...allowed the car rest once it'd come up to temperture...

did ther normal checks....(repeated this 3 times on the journey..just to give the car a breather.... and check ...)

went into HALFORD's AND Bought Over £100 worth of elementry tools..spanners/sockets/ 2 fan belts( wasn't 100% about the size..but ofered one of them up to the pullies prior to purchase.... A gallon of oil.. set of leads... bulbs.. fuses...etc.. and jerry can for water)

expecting the unexpected...."cost it's natural for an older car".

I'm saying this cos I've done over 10,000 miles last year In My 1979 Mk1 957CC Fiesta... not My 1 st O.S.F. I might add.

they do need care and attention.. I'm a strong believer in very regular service intervals.. @ 3000miles or EVERY 3 months ..which ever occurs 1st..

I do my own work... not handed to a Machinic... :?

I light of the...response... IT'S NO SURPRISE now to me that there's a 3 month law..... evenh though I'D NEVER Use IT...

But I can see some who would.....

Selling..."Buyer BEWARE"

Buying ..."use 3 month law "

thanks for the insight .

Court action ,you may win with not fit for purpose but on the whole private sales offer very little protection

If it was a trader then hes responsible for first 3 months !

Remember you bought an old Ford not a new one !

Yeah it is buyer beware, never good when it happens. You feel like the seller's fiddled you.

I knocked £100 off my Capri because I was concerned about the temp gauge not rising very high and I asked the seller to sort it before I picked it up (gave him 6 weeks after putting deposit down), if he had sorted it I would have paid full askign price. I explained I was not prepared to drive 170+ miles home just to find something was gonna break. I was prepared to buy the car based upon the overall condition & the repairs that had been done only a few months previously.

It never affected the car but it was a combination of broken temp sender unit & thermostat, all fixed.

I think your expecting a bit much expecting the seller to subsidise the repairs. Especially seeing as you got 3hrs away before any signs of a problem.

Think of it the other way round......imagine that you bought the car as a non-runner. Lets say the seller thought its had a head gasket problem and has been quoted £500 for the repair. You buy it cheap because you know you can fix it yourself and save all the labour charges. You get the car home and find it needs a £6 thermostat. Are you going to call him up and offer him a load more money? or are you going to crack open a beer and smugly congratulate yourself on your good luck and mechanical prowess??

It seems you did everything you could

Sounds like it was time for the engine to pack up.

Are you still trying to contact the seller, it sounds like you might have a case.

i cant believe you expect the seller to take responsibility for the problems with the car......for all he knows is you thrashed it up the road after you bought it....sold as seen...theres always some cheeky sod trying to get money out of the seller because of this this and that problem...its a second hand car....

I wish you all the best ..

in any of yer future purchases...

and sales..for that matter.....

I think I might ask for the thread to be pulled.....

as some are resorting to childish "name calling" and "labeling"..

It was intendedas a point of debate.....

rather than a lambasting of anyone...

I was asking put yerself In my shoes.....

and then the sellers shoes....

I thought It wasn't unreasonable.... that I paid...£**** for a car ..with solid body, reasonable brakes, got a few jobs done on it at a garage..including a clutch change.....all in good faith as state...

neither of us knew the engines was terminal.... neither of us want it to be....

I paid on the basis it was a good..un..

I find it totally "rediculas" that people wouldn't expect a bit more than what I got...... (I paid proper market value....)

I'm estamating the cost of partial rebuild to be around.....£300..but who know's how much till I get it pulled apart.... and (unlike some) I know what I'm lookin at....

And I think you've got what you asked for, i.e. a debate on whether or not the seller should be liable for some of the cost.

I'd say that the reason most say no is that we'd all potentially be in that position if and when we come to sell our respective cars.

For example, I know the history of mine, I know it's been well looked after and had a lot of work done. I know it goes well and I'm confident any potential future owner would be happy with the driving experience. What I don't know is whether it will it go as well tomorrow or next week/month as it does today, regardless of whether I still own it or I've sold it to someone else. So, looking at it that way if I go on record here as saying yes the seller should stump up some of the cost of repairs then I leave myself open to a similar claim from anyone I might sell my own car too in the future should it let them down. A request I would then refuse on the basis of sorry, it's an old car and it was sold as seen.

When i purchase old cars i fully expect them to have a few problems that crop up, I drive them back steady and then give them a full check over, get them rolling roaded,

If during this time they break i just fix it knowing then that its fixed correctly to the standard i require.

If i sell a car i tell them the warranty last till you get it off the drive, as once its out my view how do i know he has not giving it some welly,

Im afraid to say im on the sellers side on this one .....3hrs ??? but do think he should reply to your calls even if it is to say NO

You put this thread up as you wanted peoples opinions on what to expect if anything from the seller.

That is what you have had ..a truthful response from us all,so saying that you want the thread pulled is pointless :?

It seems to me as though you are not happy that the majority of people are saying that it might have just been a bit of bad luck and to move on :(

I feel that it has been a fair thread and i cannot see any "childish" remarks that would offend

None of us like to feel as though we have been "had" but when we are discussing old cars then it cannot be guaranteed that it would be reliable 3 minutes/3hours after the sale !!

Agree with Mrs Leadfoot & Vista, you asked for the truthful opinions, you got them.

A Jack Nicholson quote springs to mind here!

"You want the truth ? You cant handle the truth" (Quote from Jack Nicholson)
