The story seems unclear to me.

 

Appparently he had a saw off shot gun. If he shot himself, he wouldn't have a head left at all, so why take him to a hospital and which bit/bits would you take ?

 

I'm not convinced he did shoot himself although I don't mind either way as long as he's dead

 

Maybe he heard Gazza was coming and decided enough was enough
