mk1super Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 As frank spencer would say iam having a bit of trouble Got this wickied idea of using car spray paint to make models look bit more realistic! Now being a tad dense ok alot dense! I Gave the surface a of model a wipe with thinners then proceded to spray said die cast metal model with spray well the results have been mixed the shell has picked up few bits of dust and some over spray/orange peel Grrrrrr the doors bonnet and boot lid the same and intterior of model even tho sprayed throughly have like little circular bare bits even tho i covered them well, the plastic floor has turned out perfect! So to my point where have i went wrong and what to do to sort this mess out? Dazza anyone.... I need help!!!!
antz Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 i used elft over car paint on the silver capri model i sent you the pic of. i just stripped it down to bare metal using nitromors. cleaned it so it was free of all chemicals then sporayed it and laquered over the top. came out fine with me
over_head_cam Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 The little spots with no paint sound like silicone or some other paint repellent. if you're careful you can flat and polish the orange peel exactly as you would the real thing. Just don't over-rub the high points/corners etc
mk1super Posted September 19, 2006 Author Report Posted September 19, 2006 The runs i manged to wet and dry sand paper so it will need a few touch ups. the doors are a mess think its going to have to be stripped to bare metal primed then resprayed. Any idea best primer to use ?
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 I would use some self etch primer mate. You can buy it in most good paint shops, but as you are doing models, get down to Halfrauds and buy some UPOL Acid Etch #9, it is the one in the red can! I think it is about a tenner for a big 'airy-arse'ole (Aerosole), but it is the dogs proverbials!!!
DAZZA Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 sounds like paint reaction mate. I keyed the whole model using 600/800 wet and dry. It took fookin ages but colin is very fussy! Dusted the whole thing with primer, then built it up using primer sanding between each coat using 800. Trouble with car paint and intracate model is the jet is quite fierce, dont go to mad on each coat, build it up to keep contours and details like rain guttering and trim. When its done and you happy with the final colour, use a light compound then polish it. The badges on colins model were hand painted using silver paint and a 10 bristle precision brush..... ...... hope this helps?
mk1super Posted September 20, 2006 Author Report Posted September 20, 2006 me thinks my rs2600 is a bin job! Unless i can strip all the paint off and start again. Iam such a cr@p sprayer lol
atomic punk Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Its something that comes with practise. My first efforts were abysmal, but pretty good now. Get yourself a couple of cheapo scrappers to practise on and you'll soon get the hang of it. Some pointers - Several thin layers better than a few heavy coats. Start by holding the can a long way away first then bring it slowly closer if you need to. Use fine wet & dry between layers, wet, and then polish up with a bit of denim to achieve a semi gloss finish before spraying on the next layer. Use a well worn bit or you'll go through the high points quickly use wet & dry (wet) to sand the final coat to a matt finish then use Tcut then a wax polish to get a good shine - there is an art to this be careful its so easy to polish too hard...... Hope thats useful
Gareth Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 That's some sound advice there. I'll take that into consideration wen I come to do mine
mk1super Posted September 22, 2006 Author Report Posted September 22, 2006 Couldnt get UPOL Acid Etch #9 got number 8 will that make a big difference?
mk1super Posted September 23, 2006 Author Report Posted September 23, 2006 Ok striped the paint of both models both now got a dust in primer, pics will follow soon if i dont goof em up
mk1super Posted September 26, 2006 Author Report Posted September 26, 2006 Ok ive sprayed the car but im getting like a dimple affect when held under the light, if i spray closser i get runs in pain where am i going wrong 4 cans of pain to spray one car!!!!! Im finding it very disheartning and frustrating time and again i screw it up
orionmojo Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 sounds like theres grease or another paint pepellant on there. wipe the thing over with panel wipe or similar first.
atomic punk Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 How long are you leaving it between coats? If you spray the next layer when the previous layer is still drying, it can cause the finish to go funny. Best to build up the finish using several thin layers, leaving good time between layers to let it dry
mk1super Posted September 26, 2006 Author Report Posted September 26, 2006 Been spraying at night giving whole day to dry doing thin covers building it up as recomended
