Admin Vista Posted January 6, 2012 Admin Report Posted January 6, 2012 They shouldn't need any. Just make sure that the mating faces are perfectly clean and that the heads are flat.
gearbox100 Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 I agree vista especially with modern engines and there machined tolerences . My old boss used to work on classic jaguars and would always use wellseal on the head gaskets , its the only compound he would use. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wellseal-Engi ... 56441ce288
The Transplanter Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 Personally I try not to use any sealant, even on turbo apps, and have never used anything on a cologne lump. A mate of mine though swears by wellseal and slaps it all over his cossie builds
Burt Reynolds Posted January 7, 2012 Author Report Posted January 7, 2012 Ta. Gonna not use anything on the head gasket, but i've use hermatite red on the water pump already. Haven't tested it yet.
deltamal Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 The fun with red hermatite is separating the two parts! it used to always be used by the old boys doing their 10,000 mile de-cokes on the old 40's and 50's cars, all the Monday morning stories of removing the offending cylinder head with a hammer and chisel! all right for steam engines I guess.....

The smell of red hermatite and petrol reminds me of when I was a kid fixing motorbikes in my dads shed mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...................
Burt Reynolds Posted January 7, 2012 Author Report Posted January 7, 2012 Well, i have the sump gasket to do, the front crankshaft pulley washer/seal, the rear crankshaft oil seal, the timing cover and metal adapter plate, the head gasket and plenum gasket to do. I've got a tube of Granville Instant clear silicone gasket. I aint got a clue how good it is, but i might just give it a go. I used it for my type 9 gearbox, I smeared it over the bolts holding the nose cone in place, the cork gasket holding the nose cone, the gearboxk top cover and the speedo blanking plug..I aint tested it yet though. I ran out of the Hermetite, and to be honest i don't like the gear. Anyone used Granville - would it be ok? Obviously i'm not going to use any sealer on the head gasket.
glenbo Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 i get gasket sealer from ford dealer, its a bit more expensive but its the best sealant ive used and it sticks like shit to a blanket
