stuartp Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 nice problem to have but it's been keeping me awake at night i just "accidentally" bought another car and i need to get rid of one (or if anyone can suggest a way i can cut down on costs and keep all three i'd be eternally grateful) i have no garage to store one in for the future, no children to worry about (yet) and i need to have at least one reliable car i'd really appreciate some learned knowledge and past experiences from you lot i have a half decent mk1 2 door escort with 2.0 pinto and 5 speed box - it's not tax exempt unfortunately and it's been very very unreliable. it's now ready for a bit of bodywork (but only a few rust spots, nothing major) - it's basically the car i have wanted since before i could drive and despite it letting me down so often i still love it (not as much as i would if it started all the time though). i'm going to regret it if i sell it i'm sure my sensible daily car is a 93 sierra estate 1.8cvh - not as gutless as most people seem to think but disappointingly pretty rubbish on petrol. comfy, runs great, drives great, massive boot, hatchback - good for shopping, loading up with stuff for the tip, going on long trips etc. i really like it actually it's a good combination of retro looks but almost a modern car. this combo works well enough but i just bought a mk2 escort 4 door 1300 L - this one is solid in the right places but will need some work (rear arches, new wings and some work on a couple of the doors) i kind of thought i'd grab this (i'm very rarely in a position to get hold of a car at a decent price) sell it on and make a few quid - but it's got so much history and was loved so much by the previous owner my heart is saying i need to keep it and get it fixed up. can i realistically run a 30 year old car as my daily? i always said i'd keep one sensible modern(ish) car with a hatchback could i sell the mk1, fix up the mk2 with the money and make a bit of profit and still be happy or will i regret selling the mk1 forever (i doubt i'll be able to afford one again the way they have gone up in price even since i got mine) a mk2 4 door is very cool, don't get me wrong, but it's not the iconic mk1 2 door is it? do i pass up the opportunity to get a reasonably cheap mk2 (even with the work it needs doing) and sell it on to someone else? am i greedy to want to have a mk1 and a mk2? how long can i ramble on about it before you get bored reading?
Andrade Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 My daily is a mk1 estate with a 16 xflow and 4 speed box, electronic Lumenition ignition and 13gt disc brakes. The carb is twin choke (the square ones), without choke, and starts first time. Head is unleaded, bottom end standard, Cortina radiator with electric fan. CF1 toyo tyres all round. Fuel economy is in par with other friends' cars using the early mitsubishi lancers and toyota tercels. It's extremely reliable, for every faulty part that goes wrong I replace it with a readily available performance part. I'd say ditch the sierra if fuel economy is not great, and put a sensible xflow in the mk2, and use that as your daily. You'll never love any other car as much as your first, so then you can focus on your mk1 to get it working right
stuartp Posted February 28, 2012 Author Report Posted February 28, 2012 cheers andrade i like what you say mk1 is by no means my first OSF but it's by far the best (even if it does seem to let me down more often than not)
lotusless Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 I say keep the mk1 get it all sorted so it runs on the button, make a few quid and sell on the mk2 as it will drain all your cash. sell the sierra its an 1.8 so its juicy get yourself a cheap little 1.0 or 1.2 runabout that way if it gets trashed outside a club your working at it wont make you cry.
Arfur Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Keep the Sierra and the MK1, bin off the Mk2, job done.
stuartp Posted February 28, 2012 Author Report Posted February 28, 2012 neil you talk sense and this is what i kind of know i should do i think a compromise might be to sell the sierra now, drive the mk2 as my daily but don't get tempted to spend much on it (it's MOTed until June) - get the mk1 reliable in time for spring and then see also if i sell the sierra and really regret it it's going to be far easier and cheaper to get another one than either escort i knew it would help airing my troubles on here - cheers guys
stuartp Posted February 28, 2012 Author Report Posted February 28, 2012 Keep the Sierra and the MK1, bin off the Mk2, job done. this was exactly my original plan i'm rubbish at sticking to plans
mk2_escort_chick Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 It sounds like you've got an attachment to the Mk1 so realistically you're not going to part with it. I love mk2 escorts so I'm bias and would say keep it. The Sierra sounds like it's draining your funds with regard to petrol so it's the one that would prob have to go for me out of the three.
stuartp Posted February 28, 2012 Author Report Posted February 28, 2012 last time i had a crossflow was in about 1999 (another mk2 4 door actually) so i can't remember what it was like on petrol but i'm fairly certain a healthy 1300 will do better than the 1800 cvh even if it is ancient technology
Tall paul Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Sell the sierra mate. Keep the mk1. Keep the mk2 as a daily, keep it basic so easy and cheap to fix if it does break down and I used to get good Fuel return on my 1.3 xflow with a twin choke weber and exhaust. I'd maybe think about getting elec ignition on it too and do away with the points
rallyesport04 Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 it would be nice to keep them all but i personaly would get a little cheap runabout small engine cheap on tax use little fuel an cheap insurance group it will start on the button every morning an you wont be tempted to spend any money on it making it look nice etc etc you could park it anywhere worry free keep either the mk1 or mk2 the money you save on the runabout you could put towards your toy its alot easyier to concerntrate on one project rather than juggling three
Andy44Boz Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 Why not sell on the mk11 and with the money from it zetec the sierra? You don't have to go too silly, using as much of the standard zetec parts as poss. Sierras seem rarer than escorts these days on the road and getting a bit retro.
oxb1l Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 Sell the 4-dr and sort your mk1 out As Said before if the Sierra is a drain sell it once the mk1 is reliable and get a diesel mk2 fiesta or a modern puddle jumper Bill
Admin Vista Posted February 29, 2012 Admin Report Posted February 29, 2012 No surprise that most on here vote for selling the Sierra
GJUK Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 Depends on finance situation. Photos of the cars would help also. If you need a daily, the sierra is the most sensible option to keep there. The mk2 4 doors are going for silly money at the moment, I would sell that as I expect they will level out in price for the next few years/drop slightly when people realise they're no the 'real deal'. (No offence to 4 door owners, I like them, you never saw them flung around rally tracks/race tracks though). Plough some of the monkey into your mk1, get it running properly. Enjoy it. J
GJUK Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 Don't forget you're asking this on a classic Ford forum. The views will always edge towards keeping the classic cars. If you asked the same question on motherswholiketonitt.com, the response would be different.
stuartp Posted February 29, 2012 Author Report Posted February 29, 2012 Depends on finance situation. pretty dire tbh Photos of the cars would help also. good idea love this pic just photoshopped lows (at the moment) you can't see the knackered wings or passenger door in this pic
GJUK Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 Yeah. bye bye mk2. Sierra = daily mk1 = project car Jon
442 Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 Lovin that pic of mk1, bye bye sierra and mk 2 = hello hot x flowed mk1!! I run a 69 mk2 zetec cortina , a 66 Oldsmobile 442 with a 6.6 V8 in and have a little 1.2 corsa as a daily that does 40-45 mpg, not flash but cheap as chips to run-tax and insure. Think whatever decision you take you will regret some way or another mate. Good Luck!
mk2 mike Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 Do NOT sell that mk1, you'll regret it forever, its a beaut! I'd ditch the mk2 and keep the sierra. It may be a bit thirsty but its worth the extra bit in fuel for a trustworthy reliable practical car you're happy with in all other areas.
SteveL Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 Bin the mk2 and sierra .buy a derv and enjoy the mk1 forever
Caz Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 Definitely sell the mk2......to me If it were me I would do what you said: "i think a compromise might be to sell the sierra now, drive the mk2 as my daily but don't get tempted to spend much on it (it's MOTed until June) - get the mk1 reliable in time for spring and then see also if i sell the sierra and really regret it it's going to be far easier and cheaper to get another one than either escort"
stuartp Posted March 2, 2012 Author Report Posted March 2, 2012 what I am 100% sure on now (and was all along really) is that i'm keeping the mk1 i added the mk2 to my insurance yesterday as i'm picking it up on sunday - it only cost me the administration fee if i sell the sierra i should get back the money for the unused insurance (i paid for the whole year in one lump) - that's right isn't it? that might be the extra push i need to decide anyway all of this is redundant until i pick up the mk2 and see if it's reliable or not
