Col-ashtonmobile Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 A couple of weeks ago 105steve on here asked us to refurb his crossflow head and give him some more power, bring it over Steve we,ll gladly do it i said , so he drops it off straight in the degreasing tank for this one so out of the tank and time to check it over , remove the valves and lets give it lacqur crack test , hmmm sorry Steve 4 cracks ,1 really nasty , let me look in our parts department (my shed ) see what i got to help him out with and as i thought a nice head for him needs refurb but saves us hunting another, so first up is clean and a surface skim now Steves old valves cant be used as the stem sizes are different , so lets get porting whilst Joe sorts some new valves as he,s finished his daily work early all looking good there , now i know i already previously fitted unleaded seats so just need to re cut [img all done time to grind the valves in now all done and looking good seals and springs next and i pinned and matched his manifold if you look closley you can see the pins either end new studs and big bore exhaust gaskets and a phone call today to Steve to say its ready and lucky enough its his day off tomorrow so coming over to collect , i also supplied him with a new head gasket , happy days , now i,m going to reface his old valves and keep them as they are in good condition for another head that needs bigger guides hope you liked that insight to a head overhaul , call us if you would like yours done
Admin Vista Posted March 7, 2012 Admin Report Posted March 7, 2012 very nice Col. It may be the way the light is shining on them but the old valve in the last photo appears to have a flat face whereas the new ones are slightly concave. Can you tell me what the difference is please?
Col-ashtonmobile Posted March 7, 2012 Author Report Posted March 7, 2012 Well Scott as far as i know it was for weight saving , those domed faced valves weigh less than the flat ones and to achieve this they take material off the face with the minimum loss of c/r , that,s what i think but i may be wrong
Admin Vista Posted March 7, 2012 Admin Report Posted March 7, 2012 I thought maybe you'd scalloped them to adjust the compression ratio or something but they come new like that? Are all new X -flow valves like that or just that particular manufacturer?
Col-ashtonmobile Posted March 8, 2012 Author Report Posted March 8, 2012 Well Scott i,ve got 3 sets of crossflow valves in the workshop and all have different base,s , i think it is down to manufacturer but i,ll get this confirmed cos as i said to be honest i,m not 100% sure , i did a Renault Clio before xmas with cambelt failure that needed 3 valves and the new ones that were supplied by the motor factors we use had different base,s to the original,s but when all assembled and refitted ran perfect
