how do i find out? anyone got a clue could save me a phone call and a few bob as its just run out

Think it would be a good idea to apply the rule .."it must have its oringinal engine fitted", So if you fit a modern engine to your period car you loose the right to no MOT,

its the car that being MOTed not the engine there always one i soppose

cars dont have to be rusty to be death traps. Some fit modern engines ...before they sort the rest of the car out ..ie brakes and handleling ....dont even try to tell me it dont happen, For every car you see on this BB that is well sorted, how many do you see that are not ??? On this forum you will find people that take pride in being safe and proffessional, outside this forum things are different. some restrictions need to be enforced... i also think if you fit a modern engine you should also conform to the emmission that apply to that engine. As your engine is also tested on the MOT .. ??

So if you fit a 2ltr Zetec into a 1950 anglia .. You must pass the emmissions for the Zetec, as well have proof of and engineers report saying your modified car has been done correctly and that your brakes suspension and steering are well able to cope with the other modifications.

With cars on this BB it will not be a problem, in fact id say most of the owners on here would gladly conform to all regulations required, but not every one with modified cars come on here, and thats what we should be concerned about.

A mot will not make sure u have the right brakes etc for any engine u fit all it really means is on the day they looked at it it was ok.they dont care about things like what type of tyre u would fit as long as there the same size, speed ratings dont matter etc.Over the years i would say a mot have got easy they advise more now.u could have drum brakes with 650bhp and it would pass not good i no i would worry more about old people driving cars they have had for years than someone with mods.U will always get people drives cars which need fixing with a mot or not.

An engineers report should cover all modification that have been carried out safely. Which would then be shown to the insurance companies. I know its still going to happen that some will devise ways of getting past the system. Its just ive seen some really poorly and dangeriously modified cars out there. old and new, and having a MOT free car which my not been maintained to a high standard is bad for everyone.

To be honest the standard of MoTing ive seen over the last few years has gone down and down on the older stuff with the younger testers getting trained up - I had a tester look for an ABS light on my capri and another miss a broken link bar on my van and another (all different testers) pass my landy with the front spring hanger rotten right through. Im responsible enough to know these need to be sorted (and they were) but lots wouldnt have a clue. I cant see it making much differance on the roads in practice.

 

My worry is why are they doing this, you dont get anything for nothing now days so with this 'freebee' there is bound to be a whole load more legislation on its way to make life more difficlut for the enthusiast.

 

Remember that the types of people who couldnt give a t0ss about this sort of thing will be driving irrespective of having a test or insurance knowing that in reality there isnt much that can be done about it.

Fast powerful cars with drum brakes? Now who'd be silly enough to do that I wonder?

I'd say watch the insurance premiums sky rocket as companies will be reluctant to cover untested cars.

 

I understand voluntary tests will still be available, so the responsible amongst us still have the choice.

 

 

Insurance shouldn't be an issue, we don't have any problems getting insured over here with not having to have a yearly MOT.
