caprian280 Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Hi all I was making up for sale signs for my "own" car - its insured in my name, registered in my name, taxed in my name and mot'ed. Its currently parked outside my own house - the same house it is registered to on the logbook. How does the law stand on placing an advert in the rear passenger window? Some say its illegal - if it is illegal - what happens if i put all the details down and a phone number but exclude the words "FOR SALE" and also leave a price off of it? Cheers
Admin Vista Posted August 3, 2012 Admin Report Posted August 3, 2012 As far as I know it's not illegal to sell your own car in this manner. But what can and does attract the attention of the law is when people are constantly selling multiple vehicles simultaneously in this manner as frequently they're traders trying to pass themselves off as private sellers in order to side step any legal obligation to the buyers. People that do that are a real PITA to their neighbours!
Andy44Boz Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 A lot of small time dealers are parking on the roadside with for sale signs in the windows. The cars often are untaxed or uninsured which is making it illegal. They are also parked in places that distract drivers making it dangerous which the law frown upon! As far as I'm aware you are ok as long as you don't do the above, or have the signs blocking your view when driving
caprian280 Posted August 4, 2012 Author Report Posted August 4, 2012 Thats cool, been hearing of some real dodgey stories of people being fined etc for advertising their car for sale in the road - traders i can understand being fined but couldnt understand people being fined if its proved the person owns the car - i.e in their name and being insured in their own name etc - i would almost guarentee that no trader will put the car in their name and insure it on a private policy. Wouldnt put it past this country though to be pathetic and collar an easy penalty as such. I thought about putting them in the passenger rear windows as that does not affect view etc Cheers for the replies there.
JAY PS Posted August 6, 2012 Report Posted August 6, 2012 Its illgeal to advertise on the side of the road full stop whether your a trader or not same as driving around with full sale is the same . Its up to Local councils to deal with and some do harshly and some dont

caprian280 Posted August 6, 2012 Author Report Posted August 6, 2012 There is a rumour floating around that its classed as illegal street trading as the person with the car - me lol doesnt have a trading licence. i cant figure it out though as im not selling out of a suitcase or off a stall and im not selling bulk amounts for proffit. just my own car which owes me more money in servicing and repairs, insurance, mot, tax etc than im selling it for lol
Admin Vista Posted August 6, 2012 Admin Report Posted August 6, 2012 Until I see evidence to the contrary, I'll stand by my statement that it's not illegal for a private seller to place a for sale sign in their car outside their house. Plus, I'd also wager that any rumour is probably spread by small time car dealers who would rather cream some money off customers with a shonky PX offer.
SebringRS Posted August 8, 2012 Report Posted August 8, 2012 My dads sold a couple of his cars at the side of the road, been parked on his drive, with a sign in the window, usually attracts passers by that are walking aswell Hasnt had any hassle from police or council yet Theres a guy up the road from him, he parks them on the top corner of the road for weeks until someone buys it, then gets another car and does the same all year round, he hasnt had any hassle either and he's doing it constantly
Ste-V Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 I'm a mechanic, and now and again one of my customers cars will come up cheap so I'll buy it, tidy it up and sell it on. The only time I have ever had a problem was I was selling my mum's car about 12 months ago. I parked the car close to my garage, on the main road, with two signs in. A few hours later I had a phone call, from somebody from the council, saying I had to move the car within 48 hours. When I got to the car I found a notice under the windscreen wiper explaining that it can cause a hazard/distraction to passing motorists, and I have 48 hours to move it or it will be towed away. I think, as mentioned above, the reason they jumped on it was because there was about 7 or 8 vehicles on a small stretch of road (approx 150 mtrs) for sale. It won't stop me selling the odd car, if I get another notice I'll just shift it again, but I wouldnt worry about it if I was you. As long as it is parked safely and road legal, then sod em. Tip. Use fluorescent card and put the price in big clear writing. Many people won't bother stopping if there's no visible price, as it's usually overpriced. Hope that helps! Steve.
caprian280 Posted August 13, 2012 Author Report Posted August 13, 2012 Job done lol. Mind you though people dont seem to appreciate the cars as such, you put a price on a car and they want it for a third of what you're asking. Do they think we're idiots lol???? Put a for sale sign in and hoping for the best now.
