I need some advice you see!! Before going to Uni i went to the gym at least once a week if not twice for a good few years and lifted weights at home, I had a pretty decent six pack (not of beer) and was in good shape, i weighed about 11 and a bit stone (Im 5ft 10/11ish). Now im in my third year at uni and i weigh 14 stone! I still lift weights in the house but not very often. I need some advice to get back in shape but without losing too much of the uni lifestyle that i only have a few months of left to enjoy before getting a full time ob and wishing i could be back at uni drinking beer and pissing about

So basically i think i wanna have my cake and eat it so to speak!! I know eat less drink less and exercise is the key but a bit of solid advice from someone who knows how wont go amiss! My girlfriend says i look lovely (!) but im sure she wishes i was in shape, i certainly do!! HELP!!! (Ps i cant afford to go the gym anymore, if i would i could believe me!!) :?

what you ideally need is cardio exercise if you really want to loose weight. you need to get you hear rate you and keep it there for a while - ie 20-30 minutes of an activity.

there are so many choices - you can run, swim, cycle .. any thing you want.

best tip if your abit lazy (no offence) is to get an exercise bike and cycle while watching tele. 30 mins is easy if your minds occupied on the tele. and exercise bikes are dirt cheap second hand.

also do weights as well because with increased muscle this means your metabolism increases so you burn more calories when resting.

but there is not much point in doing this unless you take on a healthier diet. with exercise you need the right food. more fruit and veg - and lots of water. once you start loosing weight you'll be self motivated to loose more and get back into shape

also the best time to exercise for weight loss is first thing in the morning as you burn the most fat because you haven't ate yet. I go to the gym everymorning before work and it makes you feel better in the day - wakes you up and gets endorphins (same chemicals released from sex and chocolate released :D ) released into your body

I used to go spinning twice a week before work. If you don't know what it is, it's basically cycling on a static bike to music. It looks easy, but you can make it as hard as you like. First few killed me but didn't take long to get into it. I've not done it for a while, but i'm starting again. Doing that plus mountain biking keeps me in shape.

i find the trouble with an exercise bike is you can make it easier when you get tired you need to actually get up and go somwhere get ureself a bike if u dont have one and cycle for a good 20 mins away from where u start because then ull be starting to get tired but u still have to come back lol and getting home is ure motivation and ittl keep u going (especially if you go out an hour before something u really wanna watch on telly or something like tht )

the trick to it is making sure you can keep it up alot of people will take on something new and do it everyday for a month then stop copletely dont hit it too hard. you cant think of it as quick way to loose weight its gotta be a lifestyle change i started fairly recently im about 7 weeks in

i cut out sweets and fried foods (fry ups ,chips etc)

and started a helatheir diet alot of grilled meat and fruit another good way is instead of having 3 meals in a day ave 5 smaller ones ..

morning - cereal

mid morning - sandwich (nothing to fatty) and an apple

lunch - one grilled chicken breast on a handfull of pasta (low fat salsa dips make great pasta sauces )

mid afternood - salad or even soem crisps and a bit of fruit ...

evening _ whatever u like aslong as you keep portion controll in mind

eating less and more often ure stomach will actually shrink (over time not overnight) meaning the longer u keep it up the less it will take to fill u up

weights if u have them are good but uve already got more then u need ... bodyweight exercise .. press ups, sit ups , dips , squats etc are all great exercise

i usually make it to the gym 2 or 3 times a week 2 hours at a time with an hour of cardio work (bike ,rower or swimming) and an hour of weights (remember the importance of rest which is why its best to rotate which parts of ure body ure working)

and i do rugby trainign 3 times a week tuesdays wednesdays and thursdays i play on saturdays (every saturday) and play or train on sundays

or i have for the last 7 weeks before i started i was training once a week playing once and training / playing once and my weight had crept up to nearly 21 stone ive lost just over a stone sinc ei started and ive noticed a big imporvement in endurance

Davey I'm in exactly the same position! I've just literally come back from a run! I have no idea what I'm doing but I have a good muscle base, just need to lose some beer flab so I'm gonna keep on with the weights but with the running as well I reckon I should be able to shift the flab!!

i'm in the same position.i desperatly want to loose the flab by summer. i'm not bothered how much i weigh really, as i'm heavily built anyway, but i hate being 'jiggly'

try this. i'll bet you a mince pie and a piece of fluff you'll struggle to keep up for the first week :D . it looks simple until you actually try it. i know its cheesy, but it works. :) gotta love the porno soundtrack too

have this on a CD, and by chance it was on youtube :D

Cheers fellas, some sound advise there glad theres some of you in the same boat!! Gonna try going for runs and the occasional swim i think, i lift my weights but i sometimes worry that im only working certain parts too much coz i have a long bar not the little ones so i dont know how diverse i can be..

try doing some pilates - i know people say its for girls .. blah blah blah...

but ive had some back pain and started doing it at home - got a pilates for men dvd. and its helping the back pain and is great for flexibility and toning.

nice and easy - get a dvd and a matt to do it on.

im not bothered about how much i actually 'weigh' its more how flabby i am! id like to put on a bit more muscle mass to be honest anyways. I don like situps coz they hurt my back its like i pivot on a bit of my spine or something!!

Posted

if you are gonna be doing ALOT of situps u ned to make sure u balance ureself or u will be prone to back pain u need to lie down on a bed or a table with ure upper body hanging over the edge facing down and bend forwards and then straighten ureself out again (if that makes sense to you)

antz muscle weighs more then fat yes thats true but you will never turn a volume of fat into the same volume of muscle as a general rule muscle takes up 1/3 the space of fat for the same weight ... so unless u stay the same size but become completely ripped (very unlikely) you will weight similar to what u did before
