Muzzman Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 I'm currently running 185/60/13 Yokohama A539's on the car, a couple of them seem to be slowly loosing pressure, are they a good enough tyre for dry days out or are others recommended?
Admin Mk2Jo Posted February 23, 2014 Admin Report Posted February 23, 2014 They're a lovely tyre for a warm dry day. Got them on mine.
thrashermax Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 I have them on mine, fills the arches well.
marky4 Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 I had them on mine when I did a track day afew years ago found them excellent
qwerty Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 I haven't ran them in that size but I have ran 175/50's and 195/45/15's and found them excellent in the dry. Broke loose in the wet though.
marky4 Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 I have both 185/60/13 and 175/50/13 and have to say the 175,s break away in the wet without warning but the 185's give you abit of warning but both good in the dry
skeeter Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 Are you sure it is the tyre that is letting the pressure out and not the alloy wheel? Had a similar issue and my local friendly wheel man took the tyre off the rim and did some "treatment" to the actual alloy and hey presto, problem solved. S
RossMK2 Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 As said great in dry, but 175/50's can spin up unexpectedly in the wet.
rallyesport04 Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 ive had 539s before found them to be good for road use bit sketchy in the wet but most sticky tyres are toyo proxies are probably on a par with them but if you want something stickier toyo r888 are very good ive also used the kuhmo equivalent they were excellent ive heard good things about the yoko equivalent too
Admin Mk2Jo Posted February 23, 2014 Admin Report Posted February 23, 2014 It only takes a little bit of corrosion inside the wheel and it won't seal airtight .. as Skeeter said, your local tyre place can take the tyre off, clean up the wheel with a wire brush or other and re-fit the tyre ... it's also possible it's a leaky valve (again the tyre guy will dunk it in a water vat to check) or maybe your wheel rim is damaged. 1
PaulMags Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 Are the wheels genuine ford or coppies as one firm was having them reproduced in china and there well known to leak air as there very porus.
mk2 mike Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 I'd say the alloy has corroded too as I has the same issue with slow leaks on my daily. As said its an easy fix. Interesting about A539s performance in the wet, I was looking to change to them next. Maybe not now.
Fiesta Steve Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 A539 is a great road tyre, wet or dry...
qwerty Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I found Toyo T1R to be a good compromise between wet and dry performance.
theloudboy Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I got A539s on my mex and its fine in the wet and that's with my WPE engine.
BigBubba Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Yoko 048, awesome in the dry, lethal in the wet!
mk2 mike Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I used to have A008R's years ago they were like being on ice in the dampest of conditions. Don't think you can get them any more. Anyway muzz, did you get it sorted?
Admin Vista Posted February 24, 2014 Admin Report Posted February 24, 2014 I use Avon CR500s and was expecting them to be a handful in the wet..........but in fact they're excellent. Checking the EU tyre rating for them they actually score an A for wet grip. They're available in 175/55/13
aardvark101 Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I have 539s on Keith, they are cheap, pretty good dry an not too bad wet, not that i go out in the wet if i can help it
jamie Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I've got a set of Yokohama A539s (175/50/13) and Avon CR500s (175/55/13). Not had the Avons long enough to use them really but the Yokohamas were very good.
Muzzman Posted February 25, 2014 Author Report Posted February 25, 2014 Morning.... I'm going to go down to the local Kwik Fit and get them to have a look. I bought the wheels off here from someone claiming the to be genuine mk1 rs2000 4 spokes but turns out they were jps alloys with the end of the serial numbers grinded off so was monumentally pissed off. I didn't have this problem with the steelies so it makes sense that could be the problem. I've been using r888's for years, always had them on my 360hp lotus Elise, and current Clio Cup track car, I found them good in wet and dry, I was unsure about using really sticky tyres on such an old car. I use R1R's as a wet tyre on the clio and haven't been that impressed. I believe the Avon's are std on the Caterham 7 so got to be a good tyre. I'll see what the outcome is today, the tyres have a decent amount of tread so the cheap fix is just to buy two 539's, we shall see.
angria man Posted February 28, 2014 Report Posted February 28, 2014 Hi... new guy into this one as at the moment and currently Ive got cheapo 185/60/13’s... I Tour in the 105e... Le mans classic, Spa & as many UK shows as poss (wet and dry spring-autumn) but also use the box at brands hatch track days (and hopefuly a few more) so... Yoko A539s (£59) or the TOYO Proxie CF1’s (£55) for good (stickier) performance? ...or does anyone know the cost of the 175/55/13 Avons? Thanks.
