Bigfish Posted June 16, 2014 Report Posted June 16, 2014 As I start to get closer to getting the escort finished I just need some advice on what oils I need and quantity 1) Standard Diff 2) Standard type 9 gear box 3) 2.1 pinto- 160 - 180 bhp will find out when I turn the key thanks
classicwhitey Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 valvoline vr1 mineral oil for pinto with some of that ZZP (name could be wrong but something like it) additive that Burtons sell, just has a high zinc additive to protect your cam.

I'm pretty sure that VR1 already has a high Zinc content so adding extra is probably just wasting your money. I will double check though.

Admin Vista Posted June 17, 2014 Admin Report Posted June 17, 2014 I already use Opie Oils for some things, they're down my way anyway.
Bigfish Posted June 17, 2014 Author Report Posted June 17, 2014 thanks for the replies what will I need for the engine 50/20 its not a new built engine but hasnt run for a couple of years.
Admin Vista Posted June 17, 2014 Admin Report Posted June 17, 2014 Valvoline VR1 20/50 gets my vote, The Type 9 uses 75W90 semi-synthetic gear oil and the standard diff back in the day would have had SAE 90 Hypoid gear oil
BigBubba Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 My engine builder always used Rock oil, couldn't tell you what it was, or what viscosity, but this stuff was like golden syrup. Took ages to fill up after a change coz it was so thick! The upside was it never really left the top end completely, and the cam was always nice and coated, also had fantastic oil pressure.
classicwhitey Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 thats what VR1 is like, nice and thick
nosher 64 Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 I've heard a few times to put automatic transmission fluid in a type 9 box ????
texr2000 Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 I've heard a few times to put automatic transmission fluid in a type 9 box ???? I was told that for the gearbox in my old Racing Puma, wasnt sure about it so went with 75/90 i think
classicwhitey Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 ive a 5 gallon drum at home of i think EP90 gear oil. been running it in gear box (type 9) and diff with no problems that im aware of.
Bigfish Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 well I have just ordered the lot from opie oils. very helpful - he also recommended automatic oil for the gearbox so went with that, vavoline vr1 for the engine and just some standard diff oil as the rear axle is only so I can get the car on the road thanks for all the replie v helpful
