Hello all

Got steering wheel wobble at 50mph+ .... plus feels like the sterring is plusing/slipping/jumping turning on full lock at low speeds out  junction etc, i was told it could be the springs jumping in the holders?

got two sets of wheels both with new tyres and have been balanced, but none of where great to be balanced, some have 20 weights and other 20+10 etc.

Running a pinto with coil over conversion welded on, with 200lb springs.
The set up is below, does it all look okay?

Is this going to be the wheel balance still ive had one set balanced twice at differnet places? do i need a new set which will be better and balance easy?

Or could it be something else? Thanks for any input :)

Have you tried different wheels on it, steels or alloys or tried swapping front with rears...

Swapped all round. Swapped both sets round as well.

Got two sets of capri style wheels. One set is worse than the other set

As already said check all bushes for movement/deterioration and also i had wheel wobble on mine above 50ish and worse under braking if its worse under braking could be the discs but that does'nt explain the skipping/jumping when on full lock? Thats more like a worn TCA bush or worn ball joint. Get someone to watch as you go full hard lock in a circle and see what's going on that is often a good test as if its something obvious you will spot it straight away using this method.

Gets better at 80mph+

Still skips out of a junction slowly in first gear.

On ful lock check rol bar to tyre measure ments and all okay.

Going to get wheels balanced again today somewhere else

What you can try is drive slowly and let some body watch what the font wheels during braking.

And otherwise take the wheel off and take or make a leaver and bolt it to the hub and move it on full lock to the rear ,

than you can see if there is play on the inner TCA bush.

You must use some force to check that.

There may no play in this otherwise the steeringwheel is going to vibrite in the corner at some 30m/h , 50km/h.

the wheel wobble is better since i got them balanced again, but the suspension skipping feeling i bad :S duno what it can be all is pretty new and tight, most os poly'd up aswell

I presume your hub and hub bearings are all ok? I did once hear a story abut someone who had similar problems, to cut a very long story short, they had fitted an incorrect size outer bearing. Whilst it all appeared to fit and tighten up properly, the outer bearing centre bore wasn't actually touching the spindle being a couple of mm bigger and had gone unnoticed. So under braking and cornering you can imagine the wheels were doing all sorts of weird things on the move. Though the clue was the fact the wobbling was knocking the brake pads back, causing brake issues as well which you dont describe. But just a thought.

HI

i have had new discs and pads as they where needed. fitted new wheel bearing and wheel bearing nut and split pin kit etc, all seem correct

got new wheels and new tyres balanced.

wheel wobble is still there, taking the TCA off tomorrow and replacing inner TCA rubber with poly everything seems fine.
if it continues could be a faulty top mount?

Ill report back, i havent had chance to try locate it was was sorting back axle part out with new leads and shorter shocks :)

Does it carry on for long after 50mph or stop? Dont know why it wouldnt happen all the time if something was worn or broken?

Certainly sounds like it's an issue with part of the rotating assembly if it's coming and going at a resonant frequency.

I had the same problem with slow speed full lock but not at speed though.

Turns out one side of the steering rack had lots of play so on full lock was skipping.I put on a new rack and all was fine.

No mention of Track rod ends on the above list, have these been replaced?

Might just be the image (or my dodgy eye sight!) but looks like the off side taper is bent????

Either way, it's a cheap one to eliminate.
