Danish Posted May 14, 2015 Report Posted May 14, 2015 I'm looking to buy a quick shift for my other type-9. My Mk3 has a cheapish one from ebay. Something like this for £45 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ESCORT-MK1-MK2-CAPRI-TYPE-9-5-SPEED-QUICKSHIFT-ROSE-JOINTED-GEARLEVER-MLR-UK-/151677894940 I've been comparing photos of the ones one ebay and I really can't see any difference between those and the Quaife brand ones, other than price: http://www.burtonpower.com/parts-by-category/transmission-clutch-wheels/quickshift-gear-levers-kits/quaife-quickshift-gear-lever-type-9-5-speed-sierra-qs04.html Am I missing something, or are these just the same thing?
classicwhitey Posted May 14, 2015 Report Posted May 14, 2015 that mlr one is the same as i have. it works great although at 70mph you sometimes get a vibration in the rose joint. you can cure it by packing it with grease but i havent a pait of circlip plyers big enough! i too think it looks the same as a quaife
mk2 mike Posted May 15, 2015 Report Posted May 15, 2015 I paid about £50 for mine and it rattles at EVERY speed. Drives me nuts. I have to drive with my knee against it to keep it quiet
SmokeEm Posted May 15, 2015 Report Posted May 15, 2015 The quaife one on our Capri was fine. No buzzing af all. Was £90 I think.
JP. Posted May 15, 2015 Report Posted May 15, 2015 Hmmmm thing is, the syncro's of the type 9 don't like the quick shift. In our old skool gearboxes, the gears need some time to speed up. If you take away that time the gears and synchro's get beaten up. Remember, its filled with heavy oil so especially on a cold box its killing. Even T5's don't like it.

I wonder why the Type 9's dont like a quick shift but the Type E 4 speed from which its derived thrives on the faster lever?
Sultzi Posted May 16, 2015 Report Posted May 16, 2015 Had that no brand version of the ebay. It did rattle at certain rpm, but was nice to shift through the gears. Here you can see the shifts http://sultzi.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Videoita/Cortina%20gears1.wmv Edit: actually you didn't see much of the shifter in that.. 1
colr6 Posted May 16, 2015 Report Posted May 16, 2015 I use 75/90 semi synthetic gear oil in my box and find it better than standard gear oil for cold gear changes. Fitting a quick shift to a box that's probably done 80/90000 Mls and ramming through the gears like a rally driver you will beat the synchro's. If you need to change gear that fast it's a sequential box you need not a gear-lever lol . I run a quaife pro five speed with quick-shift and can beat the synchro's on that so you do not have much chance of crunch-less fast changes on a standard box. As for the rattle on the lever I believe some type nines have a plastic cover on the selector shaft this might cure the rattle of fill around shaft before inserting gear-lever with grease
rallyesport04 Posted May 16, 2015 Report Posted May 16, 2015 i think the rose jointed stick gives the syncros a hard time but 2nd hand t9's have 100k miles plus generally so its a bit of both at fault really my t9 failed on 2nd syncro not long after i fitted the rose jointed lever but the way i slammed it into 2nd into roundabouts wouldn't of helped alot
mk1del Posted May 16, 2015 Report Posted May 16, 2015 type 9s need thinner oil 75w semi synthetic, can even use 10/40 semi engine oil believe it or not, I've got cheap quickshift one in mine and it rattles, also struggle with 2nd gear till it's warmed up
colr6 Posted May 17, 2015 Report Posted May 17, 2015 Would not go as far as using 10/40 engine oil in a box because what I believe the two types of oil have totally different properties. But a thinner gear oil does help. Vauxhalls tried using to thinner gear oil and they are dropping boxes left right and centre. Looked on a gearbox web-site and you can get a plastic gear selector saddle for the type 9 which may help with all of you who suffer with lever rattles.
