jay Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 as above, think my cars got 'em on the front... and i want to confirm it.. can i have some pics please and possibly a part number.... thanks in advance...
tim Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 no pics as am at work but billies are normaly blue in color, have bilstein and ford marked in the leg, they have removable steering arms,in the bottom of the leg there is a little nut that hold the insert in and the insert looks like its upside down compared to normal leg ie the thick bit is at the top if that makes sense
Twinkle Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 here you go m8, detachable steerin arms
john_3.0s Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 sorry to thread hijack but..... what did u paint your calipers with twinkle? they look the biz
Jay_harrier Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 Whilst the free for all on thread hijacking is in place, which pad retainers & pins will you use on this combo? I haven't found the right ones yet!
60ftman Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 sorry to thread hijack but..... what did u paint your calipers with twinkle? they look the biz I'm guessing they've been re-plated. I'm having mine done at the mo - cheaper than painting them, and it doesn't all fall off on the first bleed!
john_3.0s Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 i assume you have to strip them down for this? I have got a set of seals for mine so was going to re-do them anyway.

Yes, strip them down, take them apart, remove everything that can be removed (seals, bleed nipples etc) and lob what's left off to your favourite platers. Mine are doing both calipers plus the spacer kits and have quoted me their 'Minimum charge' of £20. Considering they acid-dip them to remove all traces of rust before plating I think it's a very good deal. You end up with essentially new calipers and everyone goes 'Woooohh!!' when they see them - Nice!
john_3.0s Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 I assume they wont plate the internals??
rs new boy Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 my legs on my rs are identical to that with detatchable steering arms but no little bolt in the bottom of the leg so what are they
Twinkle Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 sorry to thread hijack but..... what did u paint your calipers with twinkle? they look the biz that was a vht heat proof paint but i wouldnt recommend it as it didnt adhere very well, this time i am trying simoniz steel wheel paint as seen below

I haven't found the right ones yet! the pins came in the proncess spacer kit from burtons originally, no retainers used. i got new long split pins from rally design as they sell them seperatly
X-pack-Glyn Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 some capri ones had detatchable steering arms too, my 2 litre ones have.
60ftman Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 I assume they wont plate the internals?? Yes, they do, but as they would have been plated originally this doesn't cause any problems AND it keeps the rust at bay a bit longer.

If you take the pistons out of yours you'll see the remnants of some Cadmium plate. They were cast, machined and then plated. I think if they were made and left in bare metal they would all have rusted solid by now (thanks to the water content of older brake fluids).
Morley Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 If it's an RS strut the insert will be held in by a threaded cap type jobbie at the top of the leg. If it's a Capri Bilstein it will have a tiny little nut at the bottom of the insert or a bigger nut if it's one of the more desirable Bilstein legs. hth
tim Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 my legs on my rs are identical to that with detatchable steering arms but no little bolt in the bottom of the leg so what are they could b mk2 rs or mk1 legs

Retromotorsport Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 One thing i will say about all this leg business is be carefull when spending your money ... I've seen prices for Billies of around £150-200.. then you buy your coil-over kit, then new inserts , can of paint, some even have to pay someone to weld the tube on the casing. Then they fit there new shiny Billies on there car .. think about the ride height and slam it ... And that where the problems start. That leg was designed for a car with high ride heights. Not lowered. If you take a look at the top part of the casing when its at ride height you will find that you have about an Inch (sometimes less) with your low ride height. And an inch isnt enough travel for a road car ... that big bang when you hit a bump is the casing slamming into the top mount. Its for this reason that you see on forums ........ " i have 400lb/in spring on mine" 400 lb/in is way to hard for a road car..or even a mild track day car. You've heard of the short casings and inserts for Billies.. well even these are designed for Tarmac Rally Cars... which arnt really that low. I've driven some really nice cars that are spoiled by the front struts... use the brakes and ... BANG!!! solid front suspension.. loss of grip.. Turn into a corner and .. BANG !! solid again just as the wheel is loading up... again loss of grip. Or the spings are so hard that the front skits around on the smallest of bumps.. and is horrible to drive on the road.. So before spending all that money on a set of Billies and the parts to recon and coil-over them, have a look at the aftermarket ones that come in a range of heights to suit YOUR apllication.
alladdin Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 i think the 2.8 billy is an m6 thread (10mm spanner) it has a screwdriver slot to hold it while undoing. while the proper billy is an m10 17mm spanner possibly. with a hex hollow to hold onto it with allen key. i believe you can drill out a 2.8 unit to accept the larger size billy insert.

I have Gaz coilovers with 2" shorter bodies with matching dampers and only run 200lb springs with roller top mounts.....hard enough but no bangs or crashes through the car, surprisingly forgiving ride
