Mismatching paint

Been repairing all the rust and rot on the outside of my Escort so it's time for paint. I experimented with a little bit and it came out nice, so I bought another can (can't afford all the fancy stuff) to do the rest but the colour match is p1ss poor at best. I don't need it to be concours finish and I know it wont be with a can, but I do want it to match, is there something really obvious I've missed out??...

Oh and it's definitely the same colour as on the chassis plate, just doesn't look right when it's actually applied (few shades too light??)

We have a local paint supplier who will mix paint to match your colour from a piece off your car in an earosol can at about £8 might be worth a try as lots of colours come in several shades, that might be your problem the colour code is correct but it does not tell you the shade of it. Try a few paint suppliers to see if they offer this service. Hope this helps Colin

Hmm yeah that sounds about right. It's Laurel Green which is annoying because it only seems to be available in Halfrauds unless I get it mixed somewhere.

 

Was just a bit odd how the first can matched nicely and the second was a few shades off

Stick for laurel green in flea bay, there seems to be plenty of cans on there, but I know what you mean, it's annoying.

Just Googled it, not many images, a granada mk1 and a mk2 escort, must be quite a rare colour?

Yeah I only know of three others, one's a two door with green interior S41 LOR or something, then two more 4-doors.

 

When I looked on ebay they were really expensive, like, £5 ish for 150ml whereas halfrauds is £6 for 300ml. It did a decent job on my lower valance, apparently they accept stuff back so would it be worth getting another one and trying it out since the first 1-2 cans matched well?

Could be a plan. And I guess if it's a rarish colour they will charge what they think it's worth. Like Colin said try a local paint shop they maybe able to colour match rattle cans.

My mate had similar issues on his S1 RS Turbo. I think he said there are eight shades f diamond white!!

Christ haha, sounds about right yeah. Well I'll get another tomorrow and if the same thing happens I'll get it mixed locally, there's a nice place around here for it I think. Should be fine either way hopefully

The best is to colour match directly on the car. To try with 0,5 L and then modify.

What Col suggests here is the best way. They can match paint and pop it in an aerosol for you. The premixed stuff put out many companies simply never works. Not only do you loose out from fading and weathering of your original paint but what I have found with the paint ID system is that its like Chinese whispers. Year by year someone changes something ever so slightly and decades down the track with everyone altering it slightly you get something unrecognisable. My Mk2 is a colour called Sno White. But the thing most paint suppliers give you is really a cream beige colour. I show them the inside of a door that is all original and tell them to copy that. Of course the paint mixers will never admit it, its always some excuse that your car is not the proper colour or some such rubbish. It got so bad for me matching paint that I now carry the formula in my wallet and just walk up  to the counter and tell them to mix this.
