Admin Vista Posted February 28, 2016 Admin Report Posted February 28, 2016 Only two of three years ago if you were to tell people that someone would pay £45k for a mk1 Mexico, that probably think you were off your meds or something..........yet here we are: http://www.silverstoneauctions.com/1972-ford-escort-mexico-6838 And £54k for a Brooklands Capri at the same auction (though I grant you it has less than a thousand miles from new) https://www.silverstoneauctions.com/1987-ford-capri-280-brooklands-6822 Now contrast that with a TWR XJ-S V12 with just 30000 miles that appears not to have sold for under £24k https://www.silverstoneauctions.com/1985-jaguar-xj-s-5-3-he-v12-twr 1
dalmarshall Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 Jeez .....that mex was estimated at 27-29k and I thought that was strong!!
stephens_xpack Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 Whatever you do don't sell em people, because we will never be able to afford to buy them back, well I couldn't anyway!!
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted February 29, 2016 Moderator Report Posted February 29, 2016 If a single cam Kent engined Mexico fetches 45k does that mean I can charge twice as much for one with Two cams? LOL I think Lotus looks better on the cover than Burtons as well . A guy approached me in the car park of Dominos this week to see if my Mk2 was for sale but I said no. I asked him if he was specifically looking for a Mk2 and he said a Mk1 would be fine and I said I may consider selling my Twincam. He asked how much and I said a crap one started at 20k and he laugh at me. So Im over inflating the tyres and attaching some floaties to the mirrors, it will be a long row but can someone help me pull it up a ramp along the Thames? It seems it would be worth the effort!

Twin cams fetch megabucks here mate but most will expect them to be white (even though other colours were available elsewhere) what colour is yours? This one has been for sale for donkeys and though I haven't enquired myself, I've heard rumblings of the jungle drums about it. Second link is it for sale with the same people in 2012. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C148983 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2094303/Rare-Ford-Escort-sold-3-000-1968-fetches-65-000-today-thanks-painstaking-restoration-work.html

I saw that dailymail article and still think he is dreaming. The shell has been prepared ok but its not as close to original as he claims. A dodgy paint job on the cam covers he could have at least buffed off the paint on the Lotus lettering. The booster is a non original replacement. And the piping to it made without attempt to replicate the factory lines. True the original boosters wear out but I managed to get someone here to re-manufacture the leather seal for it. If I can get that in a less than nice part of Sydney Im sure someone in the UK can as well! It was cheap to have made too because there was a Lamborgini Espada in the local workshop and it had two of the same booster one for the fronts and one from the rears so it was easy to make a third leather seal for me. Mine still has all the rubber top mounts and the original "muffler style" air filter assembly. Like the Mexico with the Burtons cam cover and twin Webbers, it seems with Escorts changing a few parts for competition ones doesnt seem to impact its value over originality. Here in Australia I doubt I could even get the equivalent to 25k Pounds for mine.
crapichris Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 Saw a mark 3 Capri predicted to go for £28k in my area. Was a 3 litre turbo techniques but still didn't think it's worth what they were estimating
khanlad Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 Was at race retro this weekend, someone was asking 37500 for a not even close to nice mk1 rs 1600. At the time I thought they were dreaming but after reading some articles and hearing some of the prices stuff is making not so sure now? 1
PeteRS8084 Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 Well that can just keep going up as far as I am concerned, as due to unforseen circumstances "Kermit" will be on the market at about classic ford time!

Dont RS1600s fetch better money than Twincams and Mexicos though?

Admin Vista Posted February 29, 2016 Author Admin Report Posted February 29, 2016 Dont RS1600s fetch better money than Twincams and Mexicos though? Mexicos yes but Twin Cams are probably on par in terms of value. Depends what the buyer wants really
psmk2 Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 Won't be long before you can't buy a shed of a mk2 more door for under 5k
PeteRS8084 Posted March 1, 2016 Report Posted March 1, 2016 You'll regret it mate col you could be right! But needs must as they say. And a lack of use and enthusiasm means he needs to go to a good home!
PeteRS8084 Posted March 1, 2016 Report Posted March 1, 2016 Don't do it! Summer soon be here Paul, mate I have sort of made my mind up...........
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted March 1, 2016 Moderator Report Posted March 1, 2016 There was an RS1600 sold here about 18 months back and it was priced at $65k AUS in immaculate condition. (you halve that for pounds) Given thats the first one that I have ever seen for sale here, I still thought it expensive.
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted March 2, 2016 Moderator Report Posted March 2, 2016 Mexicos yes but Twin Cams are probably on par in terms of value. Depends what the buyer wants really And where do Mk1 RS2000s fit into the pricing with these sporting models?
Admin Vista Posted March 2, 2016 Author Admin Report Posted March 2, 2016 In between the Mexico and RS1600/Twin Cam. A good one will be maybe £25 - £30k currently.
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted March 2, 2016 Moderator Report Posted March 2, 2016 In between the Mexico and RS1600/Twin Cam. A good one will be maybe £25 - £30k currently. Thats interesting. Would you think it realistic to pop mine on a boat with intent to trade it for mk1 RS2000 in the UK?
Admin Vista Posted March 2, 2016 Author Admin Report Posted March 2, 2016 If you can find someone that fancies that deal and is prepared to trade unseen. It'd be a hell of a risk for you though. It's a lot wetter here than Australia and any car you get is far more likely to have had corrosion repairs (or not as the case may be) than your existing car has. 1

My Twincam has a rusty boot floor if that may even things up a little bit? LOL I just really think a Mk1 RS2000 is a more practical car for me. I could standardise engine and tune up parts between both cars and even tour in the RS2000 something I could never do in the Twincam.
Mattt Posted March 15, 2016 Report Posted March 15, 2016 problem is ,with them being worth so much , can you still use a Mk1 as a daily like I used to ,and park it up anywhere, and expect it to still be there when you return ?

stephens_xpack Posted March 15, 2016 Report Posted March 15, 2016 Wouldn't leave it anywhere now without being able to see it. I think the daily driver days of leaving them parked up somewhere for a few hours while you do whatever are long gone. I know they are insured but they are no longer easily replaceable whether you get a fair pay out or not. Only shows and secure parking for good nick OSF's if you are smart.
