I am thinking of changing the colour of my MK1 escort does any one know a good place or even someone who would do it privatley in bedford, northampton milton keynes area. I want a full in and out respray with all glass removed hate paint on rubbers.

 

I have only just returned to OSF, they weren't that old 20 years ago, does anyone have a rough idea what i should be looking to pay, i know it depends on the prep needed but i don't think it needs much. pic below. Not sure why i bought it, its got the wrong wheels, its the wrong colour and i don't like the interior.

 

Its only a replica by the way..

 

I was thinking bright orange with a black vinly roof and change the wheels to 13X7 deep dish split rim look minilites

 

Peoples thoughts and suggestion welcome

The trophies on the bonnet aren't mine the guy who originally done it used to show it, it was on the cover and featured in Classic ford back in April 1998 although it now has a 2.1 pinto with twin 45's in it with a 5 speed box.

 

The respray is now 9 years old and it only has 2 tiny rust bubbles on the front wing.

I'm with Erick, a respray to a high standard will cost quite a bit, and Olympic blue IMHO is one of the nicer mk1 colours, 2nd of course to Vista Orange :wink: and then closely followed by Modena Green.

 

You're right about the wheels though, they don't like right on the car.

Mate if mine looked that nice I'd be well chuffed. Get rid of that orrible bib spoiler for a start, slam it a bit more, fit an original RS2000 interior and fit some 7x13 supalites, or 7.5 x 13 RS four spokes look so nice on an Olympic Blue RS2. Oh, and by the way, don't even mention vynal roofs :shock: They are best left in the 70s.

Bareshell re spary quotes for mine have come in at around £2000 - £2500 and thats with me stripping out all the internals and engine / axles etc etc.

 

Good respray with all windows out {except engine bay} was quoted at £1700.

i wouldn't change the color looks great ,get rid of the wheels tho....looks good ....i hope to see it flying past me at some point

 

Some MK1 RS alloys would set it off a treat :D

Isn't that an original Ford spoiler as was available for RS2's & Mex's.

 

Seriously though, I wouldn't paint it. Repair the areas that need it and then enjoy. I think it looks the Mutts!!! :thumbsup:

It is, but in my opinion they just look tack and ruin the shape. I liker them on a few cars I've seen but not many, Mk1s look nice with a clean uncluttered bodyshell, except maybe with cibies and arches.

Its going to northampton motorsport next week to be tuned and checked over. if all is fine then i will probaly just replace the wheels and the interior.

 

I only mention a respray because i had always wanted an orange one and am not sure why i bought this one.

 

having a mid life crisis

 

I recently have been ill (in remmission now) which has left we a lot weaker than i used to be and i was shocked at how hard the steering is (its been nearly 20 years since i had a MK1) would fitting roller bearings to the top of the struts help (not 100% sure about this just something some one told me).

 

As you can tell a novice but willing to try so don't laugh at me ideas too much.....

Lose the shit 15's and fit some proper 13's otherwise it's a nice motor . A decent respray inside and out is £2000+ and that's on a completely stripped car without welding and dents :(

i dont know about the bearings but if you do take everyone's advise and loose those god awfull wheels and fit some 13's that will drastically improve the stearing ang give you more performance :D and another thing why on earth would you want to change the colour it looks ace 8)

By roller bearings, I assume you mean roller top mounts? Yes it will make the steering a little lighter but not appreciably so. I've heard there's a way to convert to power steering using an electric steering rack off a corsa. Most people poo poo it, but it sounds like you have a genuine need for such a set up. Anything that enhances your enjoyment is ok in my book. Put a post in the Ask retro chat room power steering's probably not something he's done often but I'm sure he'll know how too.

 

I understand your desire for orange 8)8) but Olympic Blue is a veery nice and popular colour too.

It depends on the offset, but normally no they won't. Depending on your tyre selection you'll end up with the rubber fouling on your arches, plus 7" wide wheels need quite a wide tyre, and the wider it is the heavier the steering will be.

 

Traditionally on an unarched mk1 escort the safe option is a set of 6J x 13" rims with something like 185/60 13's

 

Try superlite, minilite, or even a set of compomotive ML's in a 6 x 13

If you have a problem with heavy steering there is a mod using Corsa variable electric power steering and a MK2 quick rack as used by the rally boys, but it's not cheap.

I was told because it already has

 

15 inch tsw hockenhiem r,195/50/15 yokohama a520,s

 

on it and the rear arches are rolled that it would take 7X13's i suppose i could ask Northampton motorsport to check what size i can fit.

 

Alos changing the wheel size from 15's to 13's and different tyres etc won't this affect the gearing, axle speedo etc etc????
