Relay circuits

Hi all

 

So I'm rewiring my 63 mk1 cortina and as you may be aware it has little in the way of fuses, relays etc

So I'm putting in a new loom and starting from the ground up

Just wandered though which circuits need a relay as only information I can find on line is what a relay does ( which I already know ) bearing in mind there's no air conditioning remote central locking like some of ur modern cars lol

So obviously

the lights need a relay-

stereo-

Elec radiator fan-

Heater fan-

 

Any thoughts?

You've got most of then listed, you can relay anything if you want, I would be more concerned putting fuses in circuit as you so rightly stated they don't have any. When I do mine will be fusing every cicuit. Might be a bit of over kill relaying the stereo though

Yea I have a fuse kit I got from brandshatch performance it comes with 12 fused circs, 2 spare, a flasher unit and 1 relay but I like to be prepared when tackling things

I was always led to believe anything from 10 amp up should be relayed

My stereo is 10 amp so thought should be included?

Lights, electric rad fan and heated rear screen (if fitted) are definites for a relay. I wouldn't bother with the stereo though, just make sure the wires and fuses you use for it are rated correctly.

Really the only things that need a relay are high amp instantaneous loads - electric fan and most injection fuel pumps. Everything else can be happily switched and wired straight. You could add rear screen heater but Ford never did so........? Example - a H4 bulb H. beam = 60w which is roughly 5A so x2 = 10A. That is well within a current thin wall 1.0mm cable specification and certainly safe with older fitted switches. The headlamp relay was only fitted to the RS2000 to help with the quad high beam lights = 20A and too much for wire and switch!

Modern cars rely on relays more heavily due to smaller ltwt. wire gauges used and piss poor plastic 'stylish' switches having minimal copper used in their contacts
