Made quite a few phone call this week to see if I could get my Tina front grill re-anodised. My survey says no.they were originally done so why can't it be re-done ?? Does anyone know of anywhere that can do it. Tried quite a few up and around here but no luck. Thanks for any help Col

have you considered getting it satin nickel plated at a chromers col?

Soon as they see it no chance! Think it's the Mickey Mouse alloy there made of although alloy can be chromed think it's to much hassle for them plus poss might not stay on.

anything like the escort grills appear to look anodised, but tbh i think they are just polished like that, as all the forming die marks are still present in the un polished areas, as well as if they were anodised the coulour and grain of the metal would be different

all experience i have of it is fairly limited to sending it to be done, but it was always good quality thick aircraft aluminium, std (not coloured) always came back with the metals grain visable, (it did look good) i was always taught that annodising actually removes material, not put it on like when you plate steel

also, whilst ford did use aircraft type nuts and bolts back then, it was because of cheap availability, i cannot belive that Ford would have gone to that expense of annodising a grill back then

I did mine on my 2door cortina ,sanded it all back to the alloy finish with 350grade, then 1200 then 2000 then autosol metal polish, then masked it out did satin black on the grills, all had to do was when cleaned car ,bit of autosol  around the shiny bits

Few hours should sort col, keep you busy while soaps are on TV, lol

Missed a weeks worth of emmerdale and corrie and it's still not finished, does come up nice when polished though. My fingers are a lot shorter now and I don't know what my manicurist is going to say about my nails....LOL

The original 60's 70's anodise process contained arsenic. So I wouldn't be breathing the dust in if i were you. I was told all this recently when i looked at getting some similar bits re- done. No one does clear type anodise in the UK now as far as they were aware, and I ended up getting the bits acid dipped and re chromed instead.

you need to treat yourself to a bench polisher colin

The polishing parts not a problem, got a polisher. It's getting the anodising off and all the little stone chip marks out what's the problem. Even a coarse wheel and abrasive soap won't take it off without getting bloody hot and poss distortion.

I'm emune to arsenic the wife keeps putting in my tea LOL. I couldn't find anybody to do it anywhere, and even got a negative response to chroming it. So on with the polishing

??? - http://www.classic-plating.co.uk/index.html- they'll do it for you or they'll sell you a kit to do it yourself?

And for reference, the base object isn't reduced / eaten away during the process, rather the opposite! Once cleaned and electrolysis chemical reaction adds/forms a layer of Aluminium Hydroxide which will accept dyes. Once hardened in boiling water it forms a hard durable coating several microns thick. A 'clear' dye isn't available - the finish is called 'natural' and is same process just without dye.

Key with the process is surface prep - bad will show every flaw, polished is best. No doubt Ford would have none nothing than stamp out the part from virgin sheet aluminium and treated it straightaway.

Thanks for the info Katana will give them a call and see what they say regarding prep and cost for them to do. For me to do only once can see it been unviable, size of tank and so on. When I visited the resto show at NEC I did notice on the Lotus outlaw cortinas who are a renowned cortinas restorers their grills were polished not 'redone' so it's either expensive or there are limits to what the process can do.
