Apologies if this has been asked before.

I had someone blow out the seized caliper pistons with compressed air, but before I got them back he also split the calipers.

I now have them back but wasn't expecting them to be split.

It has made cleaning them nice and easy, but not sure if he should have split them?

There didn't look to be any type of seals or sealer - should there be and will I need new, or is it just a matter of bolting them back together as tight as?

Thanks.

There are seals between the two caliper halfs, to be honest I only ever split if I have to. Now your at this stage have you considered upgrading to vented discs ? Or if not make sure the faces of caliper halves are scrupulously clean and reassemble. Take it you have new piston seals ans dust covers?

It wasn`t necessary to split them to get out the pistons [escort/cortina/capri/granada] there are two o-rings between the split halfs.

Normaly there hard to come by , i did bought them at a racing shop/garage you can try it at Red Dot in England.

I don`t think you get use the old one`s , they gonna leak.

Try bigg red for the seals

You beat me to it, but don't think the two half seals come in a caliper overhaul kit. As you don't normally split them to renew piston seals.

M16 calipers?

Here's a spacer kit with seals if you want to go to vented discs, from memory though you need an additional 4 seals as you need them both sides of the spacer not just one.

edit: Also beaten to recommending Big Red...............but the first to include a link

Thankyou people, looks like I am at least looking for new seals.

If I go for the spacer kit, what vented discs do I go for, I haven't looked into this so have no idea. I have literally just started in the car again after 15 years so my knowledge is as rusty as some parts I am trying to remove, but to be fair I wasn't expecting these to be split. Cheers.

People, last question....I think.

So if I get the Bigg Red caliper widening kit, I can then just straight swap the solid Capri 3.0 discs that I currently have for standard Capri 2.8 vented discs, I don't need any other modification kits?

The only reason I can't use the 2.8 discs now is because my current calipers are not wide enough, which the kit resolves?

Just want to make sure I get everything I need to make the modification.

Thanks.

Should. Be straight swap, you may have to lose the dust shield as the discs may catch. The kit comes complete with all the bolts and spacers required. Just check that you get all the seals required, you should do.

Yes the caliper widening kit defo comes with the 4 small flat ring seals, cos to use the kit you have to split them.

And I already have all the other bits in my caliper overhaul kit, pistons, piston seals, dust cover etc.

I will talk to Burton to try and confirm that once I have the calipers widened, the brake discs are a straight swap.

Cheers.

As previous, I'm sure you need 8 of those little caliper half seals.

If you think about it, you need one on either side of the spacer plate but the kit only provides you enough to go on one side of it. I guess they presume you'll re-use the original seals between caliper halves, not something I'd recommend personally.

I think the 4 seals is enough, as I only have the one brake fluid hole per caliper, and for the kit one seal washer either side, per caliper? But doubt I will go that route just yet anyway with the info everyone has pitched in with.

That page link is helpful, looks as though for the moment I will just try and get myself 2 new flat ring seals and stick with what I have just to get it on the road, and look at the struts and conversion once I am up and running.

The bloke on that link seems to be doing exactly what I am talking about, good link.

Cheers all, see no question is a daft one, no matter how often I ask it.... :-o

Be prepared, there will be more Q and A sessions...... I promise..
