Englishbulls Posted September 19, 2016 Report Posted September 19, 2016 Any ideas welcome. Steering wheel wobbles at around 50mph, new tyres fitted / balanced on lotus steels, what else could it be?
nosher 64 Posted September 19, 2016 Report Posted September 19, 2016 Warped discs.... Drag link bushes... Tca bushes.... Arb bushes.. Wheel bearings... Its just a Process of elimination.
colr6 Posted September 19, 2016 Report Posted September 19, 2016 If it didn't do it before, get some one to check wheels for straightness first then re- balance. A different company who did them in the first place. The it's a case of checking for play anywhere. As Steve has listed, various bushes a case of elimination
Englishbulls Posted September 19, 2016 Author Report Posted September 19, 2016 Thanks for the replies, all bushes are quite new and the discs are not old although I guess they could have warped from the lively use the brakes get. There was a slight wobble around 50 before and I put it down to old tyres on the rims as I checked the dates and they were fitted in 2003. Now with new tyres and all balanced the wobble is worse?
khanlad Posted September 19, 2016 Report Posted September 19, 2016 Mine wobbles at around 50/60, all new stuff on mine too, wobble gone at around 80, so that's the cure!
Englishbulls Posted September 19, 2016 Author Report Posted September 19, 2016 I'll check the wheel bearings at the weekend and let you know. Unless anyone local wants to see for themselves. Cheers Lee
deltamal Posted September 19, 2016 Report Posted September 19, 2016 My Mk3 used to get a shake on at certain speeds, it turned out to be the sub frame mounting bushes shot, worth checking every bush front and rear.
Englishbulls Posted September 19, 2016 Author Report Posted September 19, 2016 Yeah, I'll check everything, cheers
Mk1jigs Posted September 21, 2016 Report Posted September 21, 2016 Had a wobble on mine but was even at low speed. Everything new bush wise. After a week of testing found it was the rack. The arms were pulling out of the cups inside the rack. New rack and it's sorted. Worth checking if all else fails.

There again , if you have fitted one of those dodgy rack and pinion kits ,God only knows ,lol . puddy
Englishbulls Posted September 30, 2016 Author Report Posted September 30, 2016 Yeah I'm on a rack as the front end is modified Capri. Still can't find anything wrong but the wobble is really bad but you can get it to settle down over 70!!! I need someone in the know to drive it because it is the only disappointment when driving it. Cheers Lee
colr6 Posted September 30, 2016 Report Posted September 30, 2016 If you've tried swapping wheels and tyres, have someone check steering geometry with the rack conversion. Not just tracking someone who can check camber/caster and bump steer. Check steering joints in normal ride postition and also hanging.
Ray Posted September 30, 2016 Report Posted September 30, 2016 in all seriousness, get another company to re check the wheel balance
colr6 Posted September 30, 2016 Report Posted September 30, 2016 in all seriousness, get another company to re check the wheel balance That was one of my first suggestions Ray, seems like some of us think along the same lines. Check and re- check when a problem persists.
puddy Posted September 30, 2016 Report Posted September 30, 2016 If its had a rack and pinion conversion , my money is on steering geometry . Capri rack is too wide for a mk1 tina ,and an Escort one is too narrow , neither are a good compromise no matter what folk tell you imho . puddy
