Coming up to the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster. Dare say most of the members on here wouldn't have been around when this happened. I can still remember this making an impact on me even as a tearaway youth, made everyone stop in their tracks and listen. Coverage on this was huge on the tv and radio. People go on about the World Cup of the same year but this year still brings up memories of this event you couldn't get a more extreme sinario than this! One of the things that stick in my mind is the coming together of the people to help others, some say the amount of people was a hinderence to the rescue but that's the people of this country come together and get stuck in. There a documentory on ITV tonight at 9pm for those of you to young it might be worth a watch. My condolences and thoughts go to those who suffered in that disaster and are still suffering.....RIP to all those children and the adults who lost their life's that day.

Just had to google that and have a quick read. Wow, all those poor children - must have caused unthinkable sadness.

I cuddle mine and tell em I love em everyday, even if we have had words - which luckily isn't too often.

Not old enough to remember it but I do know about it and have read up on it in the past. 116 children and 28 adults gone in an instant. :-( I think you remember for life where you were and what you were doing when you here news like that. I am the same for the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster and also the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre.

I remember being at primary school and all the mums got all cuddly with their kids, and I couldn't quite understand it, when your 10 you just want to wolf down your tea and ride round with your mates. In retrospect, as a parent, I cannot even try to comprehend how terrible it was for every one in the community.

I was not around then but I do remember hearing about it and seeing it on the news on the anniversary dates.    A tragedy that destroyed a community and wiped out a generation .. very sad.
